The ThorpyFX Redacted is a germanium fuzz pedal built as an aggressive take on the Germanium Fuzz Face Rangemaster, using potent, high gain mil-spec CV-style transistors. Guitar Pedal X described it as containing "somewhat more aggressive - fierce even - mil-spec Transistors".1
What it does to your sound
The Redacted is, in Guitar Pedal X's words, "a somewhat aggressive take on the Germanium Fuzz Face Rangemaster - with potent / high gain mil-spec CV-style transistors". The reviewer found it "already potent at noon, with a fierce, wide-ranging output profile", meaning the pedal delivers plenty of output and intensity even with the knobs at their middle settings.12
In his year-end roundup of new fuzz pedals, reviewer Stefan Karlsson ranked the Redacted as his third favorite Thorpy fuzz of all time and called it a first choice for a slightly more searing high gain fuzz face.2
Controls
The pedal splits its controls between the two circuits it combines:
| Circuit | Controls |
|---|---|
| RangeMaster | Range, Boost |
| Fuzz Face | Smooth (Impedance), Fuzz (Gain), Volume, Bias |
The Fuzz Face side shapes the fuzz character itself, with Bias and Smooth adjusting how the germanium transistors respond, while the RangeMaster side handles tonal placement and boost.2
Power and connections
The Redacted runs on 9V DC with a center negative connection and draws 10mA, with a TS input and TS output. That current draw is modest by pedalboard standards.1
Where it sits in the ThorpyFX range
ThorpyFX builds a wide range of fuzzes, and the Redacted's Fuzz Face plus RangeMaster pairing sits alongside other combinations in the lineup, such as the ThorpyFX WOPR AtomIC Fuzz + Silicon RangeMaster, which pairs a fuzz with a silicon RangeMaster stage. Other germanium fuzzes in the range include the ThorpyFX Hanami and the ThorpyFX Tacit Blue Germanium Fuzz Face. For more on the effect type, see Fuzz Pedals.2
