The ToadWorks MEAT Jr is a compact analog boost pedal, described by RockBoard's PedalPedia as "a compact Deluxe Boost, designed for maximum versatility at the lowest cost"1. It is the smaller version of the original MEAT pedal, and it gives a player two boost characters in one small enclosure: a transparent level boost for pushing volume without color, and a mode for adding meat to the signal. It sits in the wider family of boost pedals, which players often use to drive an amp into overdrive or to lift a solo above a band.

What it does

The MEAT Jr has two modes. In Clean mode, RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as "the perfect linear boost, putting out exactly what was put in, without the slightest change to" the tone1. That is the classic use of a clean boost: more level from the pedal into the amp, with the pedal itself staying out of the sound. The second mode is the MEAT character the pedal is named for, which pushes the signal harder than a straight linear boost.

As with any boost, where you place it matters: before an overdriven amp it raises gain as well as volume, and after dirt pedals it acts more as a level lift.

Guitars and amps

RockBoard's PedalPedia states that the MEAT Jr has been tested with a wide range of guitars and amplifiers, low output or high, solid state or tube, and says it provides beefy tone across that range1. For a player, that means the pedal is not tied to one kind of rig: the same unit can sit in front of a low-output single-coil guitar into a tube amp or a high-output humbucker guitar into a solid state setup.

Power

The MEAT Jr runs on 9V DC, center negative1, the same standard supply most compact pedals use, so it fits a normal pedalboard power setup.

Questions

Is the ToadWorks MEAT Jr a clean boost?

It can be. In Clean mode the MEAT Jr works as a linear boost, putting out exactly what was put in without changing the tone. It also has a second mode for pushing an amp harder, so it covers both transparent level boosting and grittier gain on the same pedal.

Does the MEAT Jr work with any guitar and amp?

ToadWorks says the MEAT Jr has been tested with a wide range of guitars and amplifiers, low output or high, solid state or tube, and describes the result as beefy tone across that range. Like the original MEAT pedal, it is designed for maximum versatility.
