The Twinote Pi Fuzz is a high-gain fuzz pedal from Twinote, designed to cover a versatile range of sounds from distortion to fuzz1. It sits in the fuzz and distortion territory, the corner of the pedalboard where the signal is deliberately clipped hard for sustain and bite. The circuit is analog1.
Controls
The Pi Fuzz keeps its panel to four knobs, which RockBoard's PedalPedia says allow precise adjustments to the sound1.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Level | Sets the output volume |
| Gain | Sets the amount of drive, from distortion into fuzz |
| Scoop | Raises the mid-range for better cut-through in a band setting, or increases the bass and treble for a classic scooped fuzz sound |
| Tone | Shapes the overall tone |
The Scoop control is the one worth dwelling on. Many fuzzes lock you into a mid-scooped voice that disappears in a band mix; here, turning the control the other way lifts the mids so the pedal cuts through, while the scooped setting gives the classic hollowed-out fuzz character1.
Power
The pedal runs on 9V DC, center negative, and draws 30mA1. That is a modest draw by modern standards, light enough for a standard pedalboard power supply.
The 9V DC, center-negative requirement means a standard pedal power supply or isolated output; as with any negative-tip pedal, do not power it from a positive-tip supply.
Where it sits among fuzz pedals
The Pi Fuzz joins a crowded field. Electro-Harmonix's Big Muff line is the family most players know: the Big Muff Pi 2 with Tone Wicker and the Deluxe Big Muff Pi 2 are both described by Electro-Harmonix as dual op-amp fuzzes2, and Guitar World's review of the Big Muff Pi 2 lists it as a fuzz pedal3. Twinote's take differs in offering a dedicated Scoop knob as part of a four-control layout, aimed at letting a player dial between a scooped classic fuzz voice and a mid-forward lead tone1.
