The Valeton Dapper is a multi-effects unit from Valeton, a combined effects strip that packs the core of a pedalboard into one enclosure. Valeton describes it as delivering an "accurate tuner, warm overdrive, wide distortion, clean and dynamic delay(with Tap Tempo)"1. It is built as a wide, low unit that sits across a pedalboard where several single pedals would otherwise go.

Valeton lists the Dapper as discontinued1. It is no longer in production, so it is generally found secondhand rather than new.

Overdrive, distortion and delay in one unit

The Dapper's signal path covers the three effect families most players reach for first. The overdrive and distortion live in one module, with the distortion carrying what Valeton calls extended EQ, so a player can dial the module "from vintage to modern sounds"1. The delay is described by the maker as clean and dynamic, with a maximum delay time of 1000ms1.

The same layout runs through the smaller Dapper Mini, whose DRIVE module combines overdrive and distortion in one, selected with a toggle. In its OD mode the Mini gives what Valeton calls a warm, thick overdrive, while DIST mode delivers a classic British high gain sound2. Its delay is likewise described as beefing up riffs and solos2.

Controls: distortion EQ, tap tempo and tuner

The Dapper's modules are controlled from its top panel, with a few behaviors worth knowing:

  • Distortion EQ: the distortion module's extended EQ is what lets it move between vintage and modern voicings1.
  • Tap tempo: the delay tempo can be set with a dedicated tap switch, rather than only by knob1.
  • Tuner: a TUNER module offers what Valeton describes as fast, accurate tuning1.

The tap switch behavior varies across the family. On the Dapper Dark, the delay module has its own dedicated tap switch3, while on the Dapper Indie you hold the ECHOES or LIQUID FX footswitch to enter tap tempo, tap to the rhythm of the song, watch the TIME or RATE LED pulse to show the tempo you set, then hold the footswitch again to return to knob control4. The Dapper Acoustic Mini takes a different route with its tuner: press and hold the REVERB module's on/off switch to enable it, and the unit mutes while the tuner is active5.

On the Dapper Dark, the chorus module carries rate and depth knobs for fine tuning, and its HIGAIN module adds a 3-band EQ plus a built-in noise gate to keep hum away3.

The Dapper family of variants

Valeton built the Dapper out into a series of variants, each aimed at a different kind of player. Pedal of the Day has covered several of them, calling the Dapper Looper Mini "just one of many effects in the Dapper lineup from Valeton"6.

Pedal of the Day described the Dapper Indie as "specially designed for ambient/indie/experimental rockers and troublemakers," noting it gives access to five effects, a tuner, headphone connectivity and a cab sim feature9. Of the Acoustic Mini, the same site documented its tuner, compressor, preamp and reverb modules along with its headphone and XLR outputs14.

Most of the family shares the same power requirement: 9V DC with a center negative plug123784510111213. Several variants, including the Dapper Bass, Dapper Dark Mini, Dapper Acoustic Mini and Dapper Looper Mini, shipped with a power supply in the box111275.

Dapper versus Dapper Dark

The main Dapper and the Dapper Dark are both combined effects units, but they aim at different players. The Dapper Dark is built around a HIGAIN module with a 3-band EQ and a built-in noise gate, and it adds an FX loop so other effects can be hooked up around it, letting the Dark serve as the core of a larger rig3. The original Dapper has no FX loop listed. Both share the tuner module, the delay with a dedicated tap switch, and the same 1000ms maximum delay time13.
