The Valeton Lazaro Modern Fuzz is a compact fuzz pedal, one of the many designs covered in our guide to Fuzz Pedals. Valeton describes the Lazaro as a Modern Fuzz, and MusicRadar's reviewer Trevor Curwen summed it up as "a compact fuzzbox that will cover a lot of options for your preferred sound"1.
What it does
Curwen calls it "a pretty versatile fuzz with tone knobs that can make things sound nasty if that's your thing"1. The circuit is its own design rather than a copy: "it's not a slavish clone of a vintage classic," he writes, "although we have to say that it can sound a lot like a Big Muff on certain settings"1.
How it behaves depends heavily on where the controls are set:
- Fuzz up full, tone controls fairly neutral: the tone is "fat and squidgy but with a nice crisp edge: great for single note solos that sustain for ages"1
- Lower Fuzz settings: "harder fuzz sounds suitable for taut riffing and chording"1
- Guitar volume rolled back: "it'll seem more like overdrive," bringing it into territory shared with Overdrive Pedals1
