The Vein-Tap Dark Triad is an overdrive and distortion pedal from the UK maker Vein-Tap.com, built around the original Marshall Guv'Nor circuit with what the maker calls "a couple of modern additions"1. Vein-Tap describes its range as running "from a pure clean boost to full on metal roar, with sweet blues and massive rock tones in between"1, placing it across both the overdrive and distortion territory.

What it does

The pedal's central feature is a three-position clipping switch that changes how the distortion section breaks up. Clipping diodes are the components that shape a distortion pedal's character, and the Dark Triad offers three distinct choices1:

Switch positionClipping typeCharacter
LeftAsymmetrical silicon diode clippingDescribed by the maker as more open and tube-like1
CenterClipping section removedClean, for use as a boost or preamp1
RightSymmetrical LED clippingTraditional option alongside the silicon setting1

The asymmetrical setting is the Dark Triad's main departure from the original circuit: the pedal "adds one more diode to this circuit, allowing for a more open, tube-like asymmetrical clipping section"1.

Alongside the clipping switch, the Dark Triad has independent Bass, Mid and Treble controls that boost or attenuate each band individually. "Independent Bass, Mid and Treble controls allow you to dial in the perfect EQ balance for your tone," the maker's product page says1. Scooping the mids is the route to the pedal's metal voicing: Vein-Tap says it takes you "straight to the 80s, for an early Slayer / Metallica tone"1.

Clean boost and preamp use

With the clipping switch in the center position, the pedal can act as a clean boost or a tone-shaping preamp. Ben from Vein-Tap put it this way when the pedal was introduced13:

"from a pure clean boost to full on metal roar, with sweet blues and massive rock tones in between"

At the low end of that range, the Dark Triad works as a clean boost. Vein-Tap also suggests a different use of the mids control for metal players: "Scoop the mids to take you straight to the 80s, for an early Slayer / Metallica tone"1.

He also described the pedal as "a sinful tone beast, capable of beautiful drive and crushing distortion tones" while noting it is "surprisingly subtle"3.

The Guv'nor lineage

The circuit the Dark Triad is based on has a long family tree. GUPtech, which makes its own Guv'nor-style pedal, notes that "the old Marshall Guv'Nor and DriveMaster (they are almost the same pedal)"4. On That Pedal Show, Mick and Daniel traced the lineage further: "circuits like the angry charlie and the crunch box and that sort of stuff you can trace back to the governance"5. The original Guv'Nor also included an effects loop on the back, as MusicRadar's Rob noted in a 2023 review of the reissue6.

Vein-Tap makes other pedals in the same spirit, including the Angel of Rock distortion2 and the Saint Blues mini overdrive.

Questions

Is the Vein-Tap Dark Triad based on the Marshall Guv'nor?

Yes. Vein-Tap describes the Dark Triad as inspired by the original Marshall Guv'nor overdrive circuit, with a couple of modern additions, the main one being an added diode that gives a more open, tube-like asymmetrical clipping option. The Guv'nor itself is a significant circuit: on That Pedal Show, Mick and Daniel noted that circuits like the Angry Charlie and the Crunch Box can be traced back to it.

Can the Dark Triad be used as a clean boost?

Yes. The maker says the pedal runs from a pure clean boost to full-on metal roar. The centre position of the clipping switch removes the clipping section entirely, and Ben from Vein-Tap has also suggested using it as a pre-amp to sculpt your tone, perhaps by boosting the mids to cut through a mix.

What warranty does the Vein-Tap Dark Triad have?

The Dark Triad is covered by the Vein-Tap.com Lifetime Guarantee, according to the maker's product page.

How big is the Vein-Tap Dark Triad?

Vein-Tap lists the Dark Triad at 111 x 60 x 38 mm and a weight of 0.5 kg, so it is a compact standard-sized enclosure rather than a mini pedal.
