The Shanks ODS-1 is an overdrive pedal from Vemuram, the Japanese boutique pedal maker whose range also includes the Jan Ray, the Galea and the Karen. It is a single-function overdrive: one pedal with one job, shaping drive and tone rather than covering several effects at once. GuitarPlayer's buying guide describes it plainly as "a lot of money for a single-function overdrive," putting its list price at over $400 USD1.
Controls
The pedal's control layout is what sets it apart from a straightforward three-knob overdrive. Guitar Pedal X notes that "it has the classic 3 knobs, but also 2 externally accessible trim-pots for Bass and Saturation"3. In practice that means the usual drive, level and tone-style knobs on the face of the pedal, with two additional screw-adjust controls on the outside of the enclosure for deeper Bass and Saturation shaping, reachable with a screwdriver rather than requiring the pedal to be opened up.
Price and where it sits
The Shanks ODS-1 sits at the top of the overdrive price range. Guitar Pedal X gave its retail price as £379 GBP in March 20203, and GuitarPlayer's 2026 guide puts it at over $400 USD, adding that "at over $400, it's a lot of money for a single-function overdrive"1. MusicRadar has likewise described it as "the pricey Vemuram Shanks ODS-1" in the context of an overdrive search2.
For a player weighing it against other drives, the trade-off the press describes is focus versus cost: a pedal that does one thing, at a price well above mass-market overdrives. If you are comparing it with more conventional drives, our Overdrive Pedals page covers the wider field, and Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer looks at two of the classic benchmarks.
