The Victory V1 The Duchess is an amp-in-a-box pedal designed to capture the tone of the Victory V40 The Duchess tube amplifier in a compact, solid-state format1. It is Victory's take on the classic American voice, the territory of 6L6 and 6V6 powered amps, covering pristine clean through edge of breakup into rich saturation2. In a Sweetwater demo, Don Carr described it as delivering "the territory from pristine clean all the way up to, you know, rich saturation"2.
Where most overdrive pedals chase one flavor of dirt, the Duchess is built to cover the whole range of its parent amp. Victory says you can use it to add a vintage American clean sound, a clean boost, or a surprising amount of American-style gain3. Delicious Audio reported that the design brief was simple: to build the truest representation of the Duchess sound4.
An American-style amp tone in a pedal
The Duchess sits in Victory's V1 series, five straight overdrive pedals with no valves, each based on one of the company's flagship amps: the Duchess, Jack, Kraken, Sheriff and Copper8. The Duchess is the American-voiced one of the family, referencing 6L6 and 6V6 tube amps rather than the British EL84 or Plexi territory covered by its siblings like the Victory V1 The Copper and Victory V1 The Sheriff29.
RockBoard's PedalPedia describes the pedal as delivering a wide range of American-style amplifier tones, from a pristine clean boost to rich, saturated overdrive1. While the Duchess amp range is known for clean headroom and edge-of-breakup sounds, Victory says the pedal can also be used as a gain pedal3. In practice that means it works at three levels: as a clean boost pushing your amp, as an edge-of-breakup overdrive, or as a full American-style gain pedal in its own right3.
The controls: an interactive three-band EQ
The control set is shared across the V1 series: gain, volume, and a three-stage EQ with bass, middle and treble7. What sets the Duchess apart from a generic three-band overdrive is how the EQ behaves.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gain | Sets the drive level, from clean boost to saturated American overdrive1 |
| Volume | Sets the output level7 |
| Bass | Shapes low end; interacts with the gain character1 |
| Middle | Shapes midrange; interacts with the gain character1 |
| Treble | Shapes high end; interacts with the gain character1 |
The bass, middle and treble controls are interactive and affect the gain character, just like the EQ on a tube amp1. Delicious Audio described them as powerful controls designed to have a significant effect on the gain character and drive levels4. That interaction is the point of the design: rather than a post-gain tone stack that only cuts or boosts frequencies, the EQ shapes how the drive itself responds, the way rolling off treble on an amp changes its feel as well as its brightness.
Power and connections
The Duchess runs on a 9V DC center-negative supply and is external power only, with a single input and output17.
There is no battery option. The pedal needs a 9V DC center-negative adapter or a pedalboard power supply, and its 15.4mA draw3 is light enough that it is easy on most power bricks.
Victory's own page lists the current draw as 15.4mA3, while RockBoard's listing gives 16mA1; the two sources disagree slightly, but either figure is far below what a typical isolated supply can deliver per output.
History: from the V40 Duchess amp to the V1 series
The V1 series put five pedals into stompbox form, based on the Duchess, Jack, Kraken, Sheriff and Copper guitar amps from Victory8. Gearnews reported that the pedals take their cues from some of the most renowned British amplifier designs in history, with design work by a British stompbox guru10.
Victory frames the V1 Duchess as a collaboration with award-winning pedal builder Adrian Thorpe MBE, designed to emulate the V40 Duchess3. Martin Kidd said that working with Adrian meant being more precise, to do the Victory amp designs justice in solid-state pedal form3. The whole series is designed and built in Britain11, with Guitar Player listing the Duchess as assembled in England7.
What reviewers said
Guitar Player's Dave Hunter reviewed the Duchess alongside the Victory V1 the Jack, and his verdict on the Duchess was emphatic7:
"found it a Tube Screamer killer worthy of an Editors' Pick Award"
Dave Hunter, Guitar Player7
He described the pedal's character as delectable, utterly addictive, detailed, articulate and sweet, and found both pedals extremely well-designed and well-built7. By comparison, he called the Jack a little less balanced and neutral than the Duchess, but that's its nature, noting the Jack is darker and warmer with more girth and aggression, sitting between earlier Boogie Mark series amps and the late-'70s/early '80s Marshall 2204 Master Model7.
In Sweetwater's demo video, Don Carr demoed the Duchess with a Fender Strat through a Fender Deluxe, calling it plenty versatile and easy to tailor to any rig thanks to its 3-band EQ2.

Questions
Can the Victory V1 Duchess run on a battery?
No. The pedal takes a single input and output plus a center-negative 9V DC adapter input, and it is external power only. There is no battery option, so it needs a 9V DC power supply or an isolated pedalboard power brick to run.
Is the Victory Duchess pedal a clean boost or an overdrive?
It is both. Victory says you can use it for a vintage American clean sound, as a clean boost, or for a surprising amount of American-style gain. While the Duchess amp range is known for clean headroom and edge-of-breakup sounds, the pedal also works as a gain pedal.
Who designed the Victory V1 pedals?
The V1 series is a collaboration between Victory Amps and award-winning pedal builder Adrian Thorpe MBE of Thorpy FX, working with Martin Kidd, who designed the original Victory amps. The aim was to make the pedals sound as close to the full-bore valve amps as possible.
Where is the Victory V1 Duchess made?
Guitar Player's review lists the Duchess as assembled in England. The wider V1 series is described by Victory and the press as designed and built in Britain, with the Sheriff reported as hand-built in Surrey, England.
