The VS Audio Fuzzytale is a fuzz pedal, the classic single-effect family that produces a thick, saturated distortion unlike the smoother clipping of overdrive pedals or the harder edge of distortion pedals. VS Audio designed it to replicate the legendary 1960s Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face tone, and RockBoard's PedalPedia describes its sound as ensuring a warm and rich vintage fuzz tone1.
What it does
The Fuzzytale sits in the fuzz tradition of the Fuzz Face, the circuit that defined 1960s fuzz. VS Audio's design goal, in the maker's words, is "designed to replicate the legendary 1960s Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face tone"1.
Two details of the build matter to players. First, it is an analog circuit, not digital. Second, it uses NOS (New Old Stock) hand-matched Russian germanium transistors. Germanium is the transistor type used in the original Fuzz Face era, and hand-matching the pair is how builders of this circuit keep the tone consistent from one pedal to the next1.
Power
The pedal runs on 9V DC, center negative, and draws 10mA1. That low draw is typical of a simple analog fuzz, and it is well within what a standard pedalboard power supply output provides.
