The Wampler Super Plextortion is a distortion pedal, described by Premier Guitar as "a beefed-up variation of Wampler's popular Plextortion pedal"1. It sits alongside the original Wampler Plextortion in the maker's range of distortion pedals, and Premier Guitar listed it at a street price of $199 USD1.
What it does
The Super Plextortion is built around three internal gain stages. Premier Guitar reported that the idea was to provide a more modern array of tones by altering those stages, giving more transparency and bite and a tighter low end1. The voicing is darker than most vintage Super Lead heads the reviewer had come across, and the pedal is suited to high-gain work in the vein of George Lynch and the modded-Marshall tones of the '80s and early '90s1.
How it differs from the Plextortion
The original Plextortion, designed by Brian Wampler, was originally designed to emulate a JCM800 with Celestion Greenbacks, and MusicRadar described it as having more gain on tap with a warm tone, with less of the sizzle often associated with modern distortion2. The original is still offered by Wampler, because it has more of a vintage vibe with a heavier midrange emphasis than the Super Plextortion1. In short: the Plextortion leans vintage and midrange-forward, while the Super Plextortion goes for a darker, tighter, more modern high-gain voice.
What reviewers said
Premier Guitar's reviewer found the pedal handled light, open-chord riffing well with great transparency, and noted that as the Gain was increased, the definition just got stronger and punchier1.
"Not only did the Super Plextortion handle this expertly, but as I increased the Gain, the definition just got stronger and punchier."
