The Way Huge Smalls Pork & Pickle is a bass overdrive and fuzz pedal that packs two of the company's dirt circuits into one small box. Way Huge, a Way Huge brand sold by Jim Dunlop, describes it as combining "the warm, soft-clipping tones of the Pork Loin Overdrive and the rich, fatty tones of the Russian-Pickle Fuzz" in a single pedal1. A toggle switch on the front picks which side of the pedal you are playing through, and a clean blend keeps your fundamental low end in the mix underneath either one.

It is the compact version of the full-size Way Huge Pork & Pickle, which debuted at NAMM 2018 as Way Huge's first official bass effect pedal2. The Smalls edition carries the same tone circuits in the smaller, more pedalboard-friendly Way Huge Smalls enclosure2.

What it does and where the circuits come from

The pedal partners two existing Way Huge designs. The overdrive side is the Pork Loin Overdrive, a soft-clipping circuit; the fuzz side is the Russian-Pickle Fuzz, a thicker, more saturated voice2. You run one at a time, chosen with the OD/Fuzz toggle5.

What makes it a bass pedal rather than a straight guitar dirt box is the clean channel. Premier Guitar describes it as "the Pork Loin Overdrive's distinct sauced up clean channel... a modified classic British style preamp," and it works with either the overdrive or the fuzz mode5. Guitar.com likewise notes this part of the circuit is based on a modified British-style preamp usable with both functions4. Two knobs, Clean Blend and Clean Tone, control how much of that clean preamp signal sits under the effect and how it is voiced54.

Controls

The front panel keeps it simple: Volume, Tone and Drive adjust whichever side of the pedal is active, with the Drive knob setting overdrive or fuzz intensity62. The clean channel gets its own pair of knobs.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets overall output level2
ToneShapes the tone of the active effect2
DriveSets overdrive or fuzz intensity6
OD/Fuzz toggleSelects the Pork Loin Overdrive or Russian-Pickle Fuzz side5
Clean BlendBlends in as much of the clean signal as needed5
Clean ToneSeasons the clean signal to taste5

Inside the pedal are three internal trimmers:

  • Overdrive level and fuzz level trimmers, setting the level of either effect independently2
  • Curve and presence trimmers, for further refining the tone of the Pork Loin clean signal52

Guitar.com describes these as controls that "allow the user to shape the level, curve and presence of the effect"4. They are set-and-forget adjustments rather than live knobs.

Power and bypass

The pedal runs on a 9-volt battery, a Dunlop ECB003 9-volt adapter, or Dunlop's DC Brick, Iso-Brick and Mini Iso-Brick power supplies, none of which come in the box1. Because a battery is an option, it is not locked to a pedalboard supply.

When switched off, the pedal uses a true hard-wire bypass, which Guitar.com says ensures "the signal retains its original character"4.

Where it came from

The original Way Huge Pork & Pickle was announced at NAMM in January 2018, and gearnews.com reported it as Way Huge's first official bass effect pedal7. MusicRadar's NAMM coverage noted its Volume, Drive and Tone controls carried over from the Russian-Pickle side, along with internal controls for overdrive and fuzz level8.

The Smalls version pairs the Pork Loin Overdrive's warm, soft-clipping crunch with the Russian-Pickle Fuzz's thick-set fuzz in a smaller enclosure. MusicRadar described it as "partnering the warm, soft-clipping crunch of its Pork Loin Overdrive with the thick-set fuzz of the Russian-Pickle Fuzz," with volume, tone and drive controls that adjust either side, plus clean blend and clean tone controls for bringing the Pork Loin Overdrive's clean preamp signal into the mix2. It retailed for $169.99 street in the US, £182.99 street in the UK, and was available at launch42.

Price

Way Huge lists the Smalls Pork & Pickle at $199.99 USD as of October 202613. At launch in 2019 it retailed for $169.99, with MusicRadar's 2020 UK pricing at £182.99 street24.

How it differs from the original Pork & Pickle

The difference is the box, not the sound. MusicRadar states plainly that "the Way Huge Smalls Pork & Pickle has the same tone circuits" as the original, housed in the smaller Smalls enclosure2. A player choosing between them is choosing footprint: the Smalls format takes less pedalboard space, while the original full-size pedal offers the same two circuits and the same clean blend architecture.

Questions

Does the Way Huge Pork & Pickle run on a battery?

Yes. Way Huge says the pedal can be powered by a 9-volt battery, a Dunlop ECB003 9-volt adapter, or Dunlop's DC Brick, Iso-Brick and Mini Iso-Brick power supplies, none of which are included. So it works on a board with an isolated supply or standalone on a battery.

Is the Pork & Pickle true bypass?

Yes. Guitar.com reports the pedal uses a true hard-wire bypass, so when it is switched off the signal passes through without buffering and, in the publication's words, retains its original character.

Can you use the Pork & Pickle on guitar?

The pedal is designed and voiced as a bass overdrive and fuzz, and Way Huge introduced the original Pork & Pickle in 2018 as its first official bass effect pedal. Nothing in the maker's description limits it to bass, but its clean blend and clean tone controls are aimed at players who need to keep their low end intact.

What do the internal trimmers on the Pork & Pickle do?

Inside the pedal are trimmers for the level of the overdrive and the level of the fuzz, plus curve and presence controls that shape the tone of the Pork Loin clean signal. They are set-and-forget adjustments you make once with a small screwdriver rather than live controls.

What is the difference between the Pork & Pickle and the Smalls Pork & Pickle?

The circuits are the same. MusicRadar reports the Smalls version carries the same tone circuits as the original Pork & Pickle, just housed in the smaller, more pedalboard-friendly Way Huge Smalls enclosure. The original full-size pedal was announced at NAMM 2018.
