The Way Huge Camel Toe MK2 is a dual overdrive and distortion pedal that combines two of the company's best-known circuits, the Green Rhino and the Red Llama, in a single enclosure1. The left side is a Green Rhino, the right side a Red Llama, and a series mode runs one into the other for stacked gain. It is a discontinued product: Dunlop lists the Camel Toe Triple Overdrive MKII as a legacy product no longer in production2, so the used market is where players find one today.

The pedal was released in 2017 as a reissue of the original Camel Toe, a limited-run pedal from the 1990s of which only 25 were made, making it one of the most sought-after Way Huge effects ever built3. The MKII brought the same two-circuit concept back in a double pedal format with a chocolate brown finish1.

The Rhino side controls

The left side of the pedal is the Green Rhino section, and it carries the same controls as the Green Rhino MKIV47. On top of the usual Volume, Drive and Tone knobs there are two small rotary controls that let you cut or boost at 100Hz and 500Hz, plus a toggle switch43.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets the output level of the Rhino channel
DriveSets the gain of the Green Rhino circuit
ToneShapes the high end
100Hz knobCuts or boosts low-mid frequencies
500Hz knobCuts or boosts mid frequencies
Classic toggleDrops the two frequency controls out of the circuit

The classic toggle is the shortcut back to the old sound: flick it and the 100Hz and 500Hz controls come out of the signal path, leaving the simple, old-school Volume, Tone and Drive arrangement of earlier Green Rhino versions43.

In use, the Rhino side gives what Toneisland's Adam Connell describes as "reasonably transparent sounding 'amp-like' overdrive with a bit of a mid hump to it," noting it works well on Stratocasters and for tightening up metal tones4.

The Llama side controls

The right side is the Red Llama section, and its controls are straightforward: Drive, Volume and Hi-Cut4. The Hi-Cut is the difference from the standalone Red Llama: it lets you roll off more treble than the standalone pedal allows, and even the Red Llama Mk III lacked this control4. Guitar.com described it as an all-new hi-cut tone control to go with Volume and Drive7.

At lower gain settings the Llama side provides amp-like overdrive; cranking the gain takes it into distortion and fuzz territory with rich harmonics4.

Footswitches and series mode

The Camel Toe MK2 has two footswitches. The left one switches between the two sides of the pedal, and the right one is a bypass switch that turns the whole pedal on and off4. MusicRadar described the left switch as a drive selector that toggles between the circuits, with the Green Rhino side always on8.

A separate toggle switch activates series mode, which runs the Rhino into the Llama side4. When series mode is engaged, the drive footswitch toggles the Llama on and off while the Rhino stays engaged4. Pedal of the Day found this is where the pedal comes alive:

"the [Camel Toe] really opens up. Using the controls from both sides, you can create all new settings and drive sounds"
Pedal of the Day3

History and versions

The original Way Huge Camel Toe overdrive is long out of production and sought after on the used market1. Only 25 were produced, and Jeorge Tripps of Way Huge announced the Mark 2 version in 201613. The original pedal was based on the Way Huge Red Llama and Green Rhino overdrive pedals, and the MKII follows the same recipe, pairing the two circuits for big stacking tones18.

The MKII landed in the UK on 6 December 2016 and was new for 201784. It is a bit smaller than its predecessor but still a decent size, and Pedal of the Day judged the reissue well-priced and easy to obtain compared with the rare original3.

What reviewers said

Reviewers liked the practicality of two gain stages in one box. Adam Connell at Toneisland wrote4:

"Overall, I like having two gain stages in a single pedal. It's one less pedal to power and provides a lot of flexibility"
Adam Connell, Toneisland4

Pedal of the Day concluded that for what you get out of it, you won't mind the space it takes up on a pedalboard3. Gearnews' Jef, writing when the MK2 was announced, said of Way Huge pedals generally that they are "built like tanks and easy to tweak to get useable tones"1.

Questions

Is the Way Huge Camel Toe discontinued?

Yes. Dunlop lists the Camel Toe Triple Overdrive MKII as a legacy product that is no longer in production, and it is described as discontinued in press coverage. It was released in 2017 as a reissue of a mid-90s original of which only 25 were made, so used examples are the main way to find one today.

Can the Camel Toe MKII run on a battery?

Yes. Alongside a 9V DC power input, the pedal can run on a 9V battery, which is unusual for a double-format overdrive. It draws 110mA, so a battery will drain faster than in a simple single-gain pedal, but it works for players who want to travel light.

Who designed the Way Huge Camel Toe?

Jeorge Tripps, the founder of Way Huge Electronics, designed the original Camel Toe in the 1990s and the MKII reissue released in 2017. Way Huge operates as a brand under Jim Dunlop, which produced the MKII version.

What does the classic switch do on the Camel Toe?

The classic toggle sits on the Green Rhino side and drops the two extra frequency controls, the 100Hz and 500Hz knobs, out of the circuit. That leaves just Volume, Tone and Drive, matching the simpler control set of the older Green Rhino versions.
