The Zoom G1X is a compact guitar multi-effects processor, sitting in Zoom's long-running G1 line of budget multi-effects units. It is the version of the platform without a built-in expression pedal: reviewing the related G1Xon in 2014, Guitar.com's Marcus Leadley described "the basic G1X without the expression pedal and its related effects," and put that basic unit at £49 GBP in the UK at the time1. For a player, that is the core distinction: the G1X covers the same multi-effects ground as its siblings but leaves foot control of effects such as wah and volume to a separate expression pedal.
The G1X family
Zoom's G1 range has run through several generations, and the differences between them come down mostly to the expression pedal and the effect count.
| Model | Expression pedal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom G1X | No | The basic unit, priced at £49 GBP in the UK in 20141 |
| Zoom G1on / G1Xon | G1Xon only | The G1Xon can run up to 5 effects simultaneously2 |
| Zoom G1 FOUR / G1X FOUR | G1X FOUR only | Over 70 effects and amp models, looper and drum machine3 |
On the G1Xon, Zoom advertises "with the ability to use up to 5 of them simultaneously," meaning five effects at once in a single patch2. The current-generation G1X FOUR carries a built-in expression pedal, which "provides control over effects such as volume, wah, delay and pitch," and offers over 70 effects and amp models along with a looper and drum machine3. RockBoard lists the G1X FOUR as made by ZOOM4.
Zoom states of the G1Xon that "This product has been discontinued"5. Players looking at the G1X generation today are likely to find it on the used market rather than new.
What reviewers said
Where it sits
As a multi-effects unit, the G1X belongs to the broad family of multi-effects pedals: one box carrying many individual effect types, from delay to chorus to wah, instead of a board of single pedals. Its appeal, in Zoom's own positioning and in the press coverage of the line, is a low entry price and a small footprint, with the expression pedal being the feature that separates the G1X from the G1Xon and G1X FOUR above it13.
