Zoom G5n

The Zoom G5n is a multi-effects processor from Zoom, a floor unit built around a large overview display, a built-in expression pedal and four stompbox-style footswitches. It combines amp and cabinet modeling with a library of DSP effects, and stores up to 200 custom effects-chains as patches in memory, each instantly accessible at the touch of a footswitch¹².

Zoom positions the G5n as an all-in-one rig: it ships stocked with 124 custom-designed patches, and its effect library covers the essential guitar sounds, overdrive, distortion, compression, EQ, delay, reverb, flanging, phasing, vibrato and chorusing, plus multi-effects such as Seq Filter, Gold Drive, Reverse Delay, HD Hall and OSC Echo¹³.

Amp and cabinet models

The G5n's amp section is built from classic amp models paired with cabinet emulators. Zoom's product pages describe the selection differently depending on firmware version: the v3.0 page lists 16 classic amp models and 16 newly-created cabinet emulators, while other regional pages list 13 of each³². The amps named include the '59 Fender Bassman, Diezel Herbert Channel 2, Marshall JCM800, Fender Twin Reverb and MESA Boogie Mk3³².

Zoom's guidance is to pair an amp model with a cabinet emulator "to complete the sound"³². The v3.0 firmware also brought what Zoom calls fresh new takes on 159 essential guitar tones³.

Effects, chains and editing

With the release of firmware V2.0, the G5n offers more efficient DSP power, letting you chain up to nine effects in any order⁴. That is a step up from the smaller Zoom G3n, which MusicRadar reported chains a maximum of seven effects, against nine on the G5n, when the two were launched⁶.

Editing happens on a large overview display that lets you quickly add, delete or change the order of effects, with four independent editing displays for deeper tweaks¹³. The four stompbox-style footswitches kick effects in and out on the fly, and a dedicated Tap tempo footswitch synchronizes rhythm patterns and delay times to the beat¹.

The built-in expression pedal gives smooth real-time control over volume, tone or selected effects parameters¹. An FP02M expression pedal is listed as an optional accessory².

Connections and power

The rear panel covers practice and stage use: a dedicated headphone jack for silent practice, dual outputs for mono or stereo L/R connection to guitar amps, PA systems and audio interfaces, a standard guitar input, and an auxiliary stereo input for smartphones or music players¹. The included Zoom AD-16 AC adapter powers the unit³².

Guitar Lab and firmware updates

Zoom's Guitar Lab software supports the G5n, letting players manage the unit's patches and effects from a computer³. The G5n comes stocked with 124 custom-designed patches⁴¹, and its memory holds up to 200 custom effects-chains saved as patches, each accessible at the touch of a footswitch².

GuitarPlayer's 2026 multi-effects buying guide called the G5n a solid all-in-one solution for beginners or players on a budget, noting it benefits from some tweaking but punches well above its price point overall⁵.

When the G3n and G3Xn launched in 2016, MusicRadar described them as trimmed-down versions of the well-received G5n, placing the G5n as the flagship of Zoom's multi-effects line at the time⁶.
