10 pedals on Tonebox

Dweezil Zappa is a guitarist, the son of guitarist, composer and producer Frank Zappa1. He pays tribute to his father's musical legacy through the Zappa Plays Zappa project, a touring band devoted to that music1. That job shapes his gear more than most players': recreating Frank Zappa's recorded guitar tones on stage calls for specific tools, and his rig combines the TWA Triskelion Harmonic Energizer, a pedalboard full of JAM Pedals effects, and Fractal Axe-Fx processing234.

His own words on the JAM side of the board:

"JAM pedals are very impressive and exactly what I was looking for. Now I can create sounds I've wanted to make but have only been able to get close to. Now I can get all the way there!"
Dweezil Zappa3

Dweezil Zappa and the Godlyke TWA Triskelion

The pedal most closely tied to Dweezil Zappa is the TWA Triskelion, a Harmonic Energizer distributed by Godlyke2. During the Zappa Plays Zappa Tour, part of the Dweezil Zappa World Project, he showed off some of his gear, including his pedalboard, and explained how he uses the Triskelion to replicate some of the guitar tones of his late father, Frank Zappa2. He has also been known to use as many as three TWA Triskelions in his touring rig3.

"Zappa showed off some of his gear, including his pedalboard, and explained how he uses his Triskelion Harmonic Energizer pedal to replicate some of the guitar tones of his late father, Frank Zappa."
Guitar World, Damian Fanelli2

He does not stop at one. Guitar Interactive Magazine reported in 2015 that Dweezil has been known to use as many as three Triskelions in his touring rig5, and Godlyke's own page for the pedal says he relies on it to replicate his father's guitar sounds for the ongoing Zappa Plays Zappa project6. The Triskelion Mk. II was released in 2015 in a smaller, pedalboard-friendly package, with new features based on user suggestions7.

For players interested in this family of effects, the Triskelion sits in filter and boost territory: a Harmonic Energizer that shapes and energizes the signal rather than adding gain alone.

The Side Step connection

Dweezil also had a hand in the idea behind another TWA pedal. The Side Step, a universal variable-state LFO, came out of discussions with him:

"The Side Step concept arose from discussions with Dweezil Zappa, who had envisioned a sample/hold function for the TWA Triskelion."
Godlyke8

TWA's tech took the idea further, slaving the Triskelion to an external LFO through its expression jack89. So the sample/hold effect Dweezil imagined became, in the shipped product, a way to drive the Triskelion (and other expression-equipped pedals) from an external LFO. Delicious Audio reported the same origin story when the pedal launched9.

The Zappa Plays Zappa pedalboard

JAM Pedals lists Dweezil among their artists, and their artist page names the pedals he uses: the Ripple, RetroVibe, WaterFall, Dyna-ssoR and Red Muck3. Product pages across the JAM range back this up, including the Double Dreamer and the Wahcko wah1011. Many of these appear in custom finishes built for him, which gives a picture of how deep the relationship goes.

A few things stand out from that table. The Ripple appears in five finishes named for him, the RetroVibe in four, and the Double Dreamer in four, which suggests he keeps multiple units of each on the board or has gone through several iterations with the company. The RetroVibe B-stock listing also carries his name33.

The custom finishes in the table are one-off paint jobs on standard JAM Pedals circuits. A "Moon Soup" Ripple is the same phaser as any other Ripple; only the artwork differs.

Beyond JAM, LunaStone says his pedalboard includes their Big Fella TrueOverDrive pedal1. His rig, then, covers these bases:

  • Tone replication: up to three TWA Triskelion Harmonic Energizers for Frank Zappa's guitar tones25
  • Modulation: JAM Pedals Ripple phaser, RetroVibe vibrato and WaterFall chorus3
  • Dynamics and dirt: JAM Pedals Dyna-ssoR compressor, Red Muck fuzz, Double Dreamer overdrive, Wahcko wah, and the LunaStone Big Fella TrueOverDrive131011
  • Amp and effects processing: Fractal Axe-Fx units4

The Axe-Fx years

Pedals are only part of the rig. In 2009 Dweezil was, in the words of a Fractal Audio interview with Matt Picone and Chris Letchford, "heavy into the Axe-Fx" and a big advocate of the unit and of Fractal4.

What the rig is for

The through-line of Dweezil Zappa's gear choices is the Zappa Plays Zappa project. The Triskelion exists in his rig specifically to reach his father's tones26, and the JAM pedals earned their place, in his own words, by letting him create sounds he had previously only been able to get close to3. For a player studying this rig, the lesson is not a shopping list but an approach: identify the specific tones a repertoire demands, then choose the individual tools that reach them, whether that is a Harmonic Energizer run in triplicate, a phaser in five finishes, or a modeling unit carrying the rest.

FAQ

What pedals does Dweezil Zappa use?

His JAM Pedals board includes the Ripple phaser, RetroVibe, WaterFall chorus, Dyna-ssoR compressor, Red Muck fuzz, Double Dreamer overdrive and Wahcko wah, many in custom finishes31011. He also runs the TWA Triskelion Harmonic Energizer, as many as three at once5, the LunaStone Big Fella TrueOverDrive1, and Fractal Axe-Fx units4.

Did Dweezil Zappa help design the TWA Side Step?

The concept arose from discussions with him: he envisioned a sample/hold function for the Triskelion, and TWA's tech realized the idea by slaving the Triskelion to an external LFO through its expression jack89.

What is the TWA Triskelion pedal?

A Harmonic Energizer pedal from TWA, distributed by Godlyke2. Dweezil uses it to replicate some of Frank Zappa's guitar tones2, and the Mk. II shipped in 2015 in a smaller, pedalboard-friendly package7.

Does Dweezil Zappa play his father's music live?

Yes. He pays tribute to his father Frank Zappa's musical legacy through the Zappa Plays Zappa project1, and on that tour he uses the Triskelion to replicate some of Frank Zappa's guitar tones2.

Questions

What pedals does Dweezil Zappa use?

Dweezil Zappa's pedalboard includes several JAM Pedals models: the Ripple phaser, RetroVibe, WaterFall, Dyna-ssoR, Red Muck, Double Dreamer and the Wahcko wah, across many custom finishes. Did Dweezil Zappa help design the TWA Side Step?

Partly. The Side Step concept arose from discussions with Dweezil Zappa, who had envisioned a sample/hold function for the TWA Triskelion. TWA's tech then came up with the realized design, slaving the Triskelion to an external LFO through its expression jack.
