The Line 6 POD HD Pro is a rack-mountable amp and effects modeler, announced in September 2011 as a rack-format member of the POD HD family1. It is built on Line 6's HD modeling technology and packs amp models, preamp models, speaker and mic models, and more than 100 M-Class effects into a 2RU chassis2. Line 6 lists it as a legacy product: the POD HD Pro is no longer made3.
For a player, it works as a complete guitar rig in a rack: plug a guitar in, choose an HD amp model, add effects, and send the result to a PA, a power amp, or a recording interface. Line 6's HD models were designed to emulate detailed amplifier behavior, including single-ended class A tube stages, class AB push/pull interactions, and power supply behavior with nuance2.
A rack amp and effects modeler
The POD HD Pro arrived as the rack-format version of the POD HD line. Premier Guitar's announcement described it as a "POD HD Pro rack-mountable multi-effect processor" featuring "revolutionary Line 6 HD modeling technology"4. Guitar World reported the unit in a burly all-metal faceplate and chassis, aimed at players who want the POD HD sound in a touring rack rather than on the floor2.
The HD modeling at its core was a reworking of Line 6's earlier POD approach. When the POD HD family was introduced, Line 6 re-modeled amplifiers that had been modeled for earlier POD products using the new HD amp modeling technology1. The family debuted with 16 brand-new Line 6 HD amp models5.
Models, presets and signal paths
The POD HD Pro is loaded with 22 HD guitar amp models and 22 HD guitar preamp-only models2. The preamp-only models suit players running into a real power amp and speaker cabinet, while the full amp models feed the onboard speaker and mic emulations.
Alongside the amps, the unit carries 16 speaker models spanning from the late 30s to today, and 8 mic models based on essential condensers, dynamics and ribbons2. That gives a player the full recording chain, amp to cabinet to microphone, inside the rack.
The effects come from Line 6's M-Class line. MusicRadar's review of the POD HD family noted that "in addition to the amp models, you also get M-Class effects as found in the M9 and M13 stompbox modellers"6. The POD HD Pro includes 100+ M-Class effects, broken down as follows2:
| Effect category | Count |
|---|---|
| Delays | 19 |
| Modulations | 23 |
| Distortions | 17 |
| Compressors and EQs | 12 |
| Filters | 26 |
| Reverbs | 12 |
Everything is stored in 512 user-writable preset locations, and the unit supports parallel paths for running two full and independent signal chains simultaneously2. That means one preset can hold, for example, a clean and a dirty path, or two entirely different rigs, switchable within a single patch.
Inputs, outputs and MIDI
The rear panel is built for studio and stage integration. Guitar World's launch coverage lists the connections2:
- Guitar input with switchable pad
- 1/4" unbalanced outputs, switchable mono/stereo and instrument/line level
- MIDI In and Out/Thru
The MIDI In and Out/Thru connections let you change presets from a MIDI footcontroller or sync the unit with the rest of a MIDI rig2. The switchable pad on the guitar input is a practical touch for hot pickups or line-level sources.
The wider POD HD family carried studio-ready I/O as well: the desktop POD HD featured a 1/4-inch guitar input, stereo 1/4-inch balanced outs, USB 2.0, and S/PDIF out1. Performer Mag's review of the POD HD noted 1/4-inch left and right outputs, a headphone out, and a standard USB port7.
The POD HD family and Pro X
The POD HD Pro sits in a long line of POD products1. The family debuted 16 brand-new Line 6 HD amp models5, and later expanded to a desktop unit, the POD HD Desktop, and the rack-mountable Pro5.
In September 2013, Line 6 announced the POD HD Pro X, which Premier Guitar described as making "the latest POD available in a rack-mountable form factor" while "replacing the popular POD HD Pro"8. Like the recently released POD HD500X, the Pro X features more DSP processing power than before8. Line 6 positioned it as "the ultimate creative studio tool for guitar players"8.
Both rack units are now legacy products: the POD HD Pro and the POD HD Pro X are no longer made39. Players shopping Line 6's current rack-format modeler are pointed to the Helix Rack generation instead.
The POD HD Pro is a discontinued legacy product3. Its $979 MSRP dates from its 2011 launch2; any price on the used market today is set by sellers, not Line 6.
Line 6 still hosts documentation for both units, including the POD HD Pro Quick Start Guide and the POD HD Pro X Advanced Guide, on its legacy product pages39.

Questions
How many rack spaces does the POD HD Pro take up?
The POD HD Pro occupies 2RU of rack space, so it takes up two standard rack units. It is built into an all-metal faceplate and chassis, which Line 6 described as burly construction suited to rack mounting and touring use.
What was the original price of the POD HD Pro?
When Line 6 announced the POD HD Pro in September 2011, it carried an MSRP of $979. It is a legacy product and no longer made, so that figure only reflects its original launch pricing, not what a used unit costs today.
What is the difference between the POD HD Pro and the POD HD Pro X?
The POD HD Pro X replaced the POD HD Pro in 2013 and, like the POD HD500X, offers more DSP processing power than before. Both are rack-mountable, discontinued units built on Line 6 HD modeling, but the Pro X is the later, more powerful version.
Does the POD HD Pro have MIDI?
Yes. The POD HD Pro has MIDI In and Out/Thru connections, which lets you switch presets from a MIDI controller or integrate it with the rest of a MIDI-equipped rig.
