OKKO FX

16 pedals on Tonebox

OKKO FX is a German guitar effects company, officially launched in 2003 and headquartered in Leipzig. Every pedal is handbuilt there by actively touring or retired musicians and technicians, and the company says thousands of its pedals have found their place on pedalboards of sound enthusiasts worldwide1.

The company's reputation rests on overdrive and high-gain drive pedals, above all the Diablo line, which OKKO FX describes as "the pedal that started it all"2. Around that core the range has grown to include distortion, compression, modulation and fuzz.

Handbuilt in Leipzig since the early 2000s

OKKO FX says of itself: "Every pedal is handbuilt by actively touring or retired musicians and technicians here in Leipzig, Germany." The company repeats that statement across its product pages, from the Dirty Diablo to the BIG MOD, THE DYNAMIST and the T3 Tremolo, and adds that each pedal is set up individually for optimum performance1356.

The official launch came in 2003, and the company says that since then "thousands of our pedals have found their place on the pedalboards of sound enthusiasts worldwide"31.

Known for overdrive and high-gain drive pedals

The Diablo family is the center of the range. The original Diablo is the company's founding design, and it has since been expanded into several versions27:

PedalWhat it is
Diablo DualSuper-dynamic 2-channel overdrive / distortion8
Diablo GH SignatureSuper-dynamic overdrive and clean boost, a 2-in-1 pedal7
Diablo 20th Anniversary EditionLimited big-box version of the original Diablo2
Dirty Diablo DualRaw-voiced dual overdrive in the Diablo family9

Delicious Audio called the original Diablo "one of [OKKO's] most successful stompbox designs" and reported that "the German manufacturer decided to offer an upgraded version of it with the Diablo Dual"10.

On the high-gain side, the Rectoplexxx is described as a high-gain overdrive/distortion pedal11. Beyond drive, the range includes the Coca Comp MKII compressor12, the T3 Tremolo6, the BIG MOD modulation pedal3, THE DYNAMIST5, the V.I.B.13, and the Holy Grit and Twinsonic V2.

The Diablo Dual in detail

The Diablo Dual carries two overdrive channels with separate Drive and Level knobs, which is the main difference from the single-channel original10. Delicious Audio's write-up, updated October 4, 2023, also covers its fine-tuning controls:

  • BODY: adds bass and low mids for a fat sound and a different gain structure from the older Diablo and the GH model10
  • INPUT: a three-position mini-switch (normal / lowgain / top boost) that sets the sensitivity of the input gain stage for best interaction with your guitars10
  • FEED: controls low frequencies in the input signal, allowing tight and transparent sounds even with fat-sounding neck pickups10

The Diablo GH Signature takes a different route: OKKO FX says it is "based on the classic Diablo but comes with a few tweaks and a set of new controls that affect the 'feel' of the pedal," offering "exceptional dynamic qualities and super-clear, warm tone in a precisely adjustable 2-in-1 Overdrive and Boost pedal"7.
