The BIG MOD is a distortion pedal from OKKO FX, described by the maker as a "Red Knob enhanced Distortion". It is based on the Russian Big Muff circuit, the fuzz-distortion design known for what OKKO FX calls "its thick, massive sound, the rumble, the sustain". The pedal is handbuilt in Leipzig, Germany, by what the maker describes as actively touring or retired musicians and technicians.1
What the Red Knob does
The Red Knob is the pedal's defining addition to the Big Muff formula. OKKO FX explains that, unlike other mods, this control works directly on the last gain stage: turning it up gradually increases mids and clarity, and higher settings add distortion and presence. In practice, that gives a player a way to pull the midrange forward from a circuit that is often associated with a scooped sound, without changing the basic character of the pedal.1

Retrofit option for Green Russian owners
The Red Knob is not only available built into the BIG MOD. OKKO FX states that if you already own a Green Russian (reissue) and feel it is missing a Red Knob, the company can add one to the existing pedal. That makes the BIG MOD's control available as a modification rather than requiring a separate purchase.1
