The AMT B2 is a preamp and effects pedal from AMT Electronics, part of the next generation of the company's Legend Amp series, the LA2 line. It is a two-channel preamp that switches between clean and overdriven channels by footswitch, and AMT describes its sound as similar to the Sharp channel of Bogner Amplifiers: a contemporary, slightly refined but fascinating high-gain voice1.

The pedal combines an analog preamp with digital extras. The analog preamp offers Clean, Low gain and High gain modes, and behind it sit a power amp section with nine types, an IR-based cabinet simulator with one IR for both L/R channels per preset, a parametric pre/post EQ and a global noise gate2. AMT says the LA2 line uses original circuit designs developed by its own specialists, allowing a bright and rich sound in the style of original tube overdrives while running on low-voltage 9V power with low current consumption1.

Sound and circuit design

AMT positions the B2 as a high-gain preamp. The maker's own description of the pedal13:

"B2 represents the response, characteristics, gain, and tonal nuances similar to that of Sharp channel of Bogner Amplifiers"
AMT Electronics product page1

AMT describes the B2 as a two-channel preamp, with a footswitch switching between clean and overdriven channels1. For its sound, the maker says the B2 "represents the response, characteristics, gain, and tonal nuances similar to that of Sharp channel of Bogner Amplifie", a contemporary, slightly refined high-gain character1. The B2 belongs to the next generation of the Legend Amp series, which AMT calls the LA2 line, an enhanced upgraded "PRO" version of the original series1.

Outputs and connections

The B2's most distinctive connection feature is its output section. AMT lists three outputs, all usable at the same time1:

  • CAB SIM OUT, carrying the IR cabinet-simulated signal
  • PREAMP OUT, carrying the preamp signal
  • DRIVE OUT, carrying the drive signal

Having all three live at once means the pedal can feed a amp's clean input with the drive signal, a power amp or full-range source with the preamp signal, and a PA or FRFR speaker with the cab-simulated output, without replugging between uses1.

Bypass and power

In effect mode the B2 uses what AMT calls a "partial" active bypass. According to AMT, this reduces the need to minimize the length of used cables and retains the original sound when the effect is off1.

Power comes from a 9-12V DC supply with negative center polarity, and AMT lists an adapter or battery as the options1. The pedal measures 110 x 62 x 58 mm1.

The B2's noise gate is a global setting, not a per-preset one, so it applies to both channels and every preset on the pedal2.

Questions

What amp is the AMT B2 modeled on?

AMT Electronics describes the B2 as having the response, characteristics, gain and tonal nuances similar to the Sharp channel of Bogner Amplifiers, a contemporary, slightly refined high-gain sound. The circuit is AMT's own design, built to give a bright and rich sound in the style of original tube overdrives while running on low-voltage 9V power with low current consumption.

Does the AMT B2 run on a battery?

Yes. The B2 takes 9 to 12V DC power with negative center, and AMT lists an adapter or battery as power options. It is a small pedal, measuring 110 x 62 x 58 mm, so it fits a compact pedalboard.

Does the AMT B2 have a noise gate?

Yes. AMT lists a Noise Gate as a feature of the B2, and it is a global setting, so it applies across the pedal rather than being set per preset.

What are the three outputs on the AMT B2?

The B2 has three outputs: CAB SIM OUT, PREAMP OUT and DRIVE OUT. AMT states that all three can be used simultaneously, which lets you send a cab-simulated signal, a raw preamp signal and a drive signal to different destinations at the same time.

What kind of bypass does the AMT B2 use?

In effect mode the B2 uses what AMT calls a partial active bypass. According to AMT, this reduces the need to minimize the length of used cables and retains the original sound when the effect is off.

Does the AMT B2 have a cabinet simulator?

Yes. The B2 includes an IR-based cabinet simulator, with one IR assigned to both L/R channels per preset. It also offers a parametric pre/post EQ and a power amp section with nine types.
