The AMT P2 is a compact preamp pedal from AMT Electronics, part of the company's Legend 2 series. It is a two-channel analog preamp that switches between a clean channel and an overdriven channel by footswitch, with the overdrive side offering low gain and high gain modes12. AMT's demo material compares its character against the EVH 5150 amplifier, which is the amp the Legend P-series circuits are voiced around3.

The circuits are AMT's own designs, built to work from low-voltage 9V power with low current consumption, rather than copies of tube-amp schematics scaled down1. The pedal is listed as available now1.

Channels and controls

The P2 acts as a two-channel preamp, with the switch between the clean and overdriven channels made by footswitch1. On the drive side, AMT describes three operating modes: Clean, Low gain and High gain2.

The main output control is OD LEVEL, which adjusts the overall loudness of the pedal's output1. Beyond that, AMT's media center lists a broader feature set for the Legend 2 P2: a noise gate as a global setting, a delay or reverb effect per preset, hi/low pass filters with a presence control, and a power amp section with nine types235. In a demo video for the series, Fred Brum walks through the delay or reverb per preset among the pedal's features5.

Outputs and bypass

The P2 has three outputs: CAB SIM OUT, PREAMP OUT and DRIVE OUT, and AMT states they can be used simultaneously1. That lets one pedal feed a recording setup from the cab-sim output while also driving a power amp or another drive pedal at the same time.

When the effect is off, the pedal uses what AMT calls a "partial" active bypass, which AMT says reduces the need to minimize the length of the cable used after it1. In bypass the pedal can also apply optional clean level and clean boost controls, though AMT notes this works only with the CAB SIM OUT and PREAMP OUT outputs, not the DRIVE OUT1.

The bypass's clean level and clean boost controls apply only to the CAB SIM OUT and PREAMP OUT outputs. The DRIVE OUT does not carry them1.

Power

AMT specifies 9 to 12V DC power with a negative center tip, from either an adapter or a battery1. RockBoard's PedalPedia listing for the AMT Electronics Preamp P2 gives the supply as 12V DC, center negative, with a current draw of 6mA4. AMT itself describes the pedal's power consumption only as low1.

The two listings disagree on voltage range: AMT's own page says 9 to 12V DC, while RockBoard lists 12V DC. Both agree on center-negative polarity14.

Because a battery is supported, the P2 can run without a power supply, which suits small boards and travel rigs1.

The Legend 2 series

The P2 sits in AMT's Legend 2 series of preamp pedals alongside the AMT E2, AMT D2, AMT B2 and AMT C2, which AMT groups in a comparison covering high to medium gain designs3. AMT's media center also carries a demo of the Legend P2 used with an EVH 5150 III amplifier, pairing the pedal against the amp it is voiced around3.

Questions

Can the AMT P2 run on a battery?

Yes. AMT specifies 9 to 12V DC power, negative center, supplied by an adapter or a battery, so the pedal works on a pedalboard or standalone without a power supply.

What polarity does the AMT P2 power supply need?

The AMT P2 needs a DC supply with a negative center tip. AMT rates the pedal at 9 to 12V DC; RockBoard's listing gives the same center-negative polarity at 12V DC.

Can the three outputs of the AMT P2 be used at the same time?

Yes. The pedal has three outputs, CAB SIM OUT, PREAMP OUT and DRIVE OUT, and AMT states they are usable simultaneously, so you can feed a recording interface, a power amp and a drive input at once.

What other pedals are in the AMT Legend 2 series?

The Legend 2 series includes the P2 alongside the E2, D2, B2 and C2 preamp pedals, which AMT groups as high to medium gain designs.

How big is the AMT P2?

AMT lists the P2 at 110 x 62 x 58 mm, small enough to fit in a tight pedalboard row.
