The Anasounds La Brute is a spring tank: the box full of springs that generates the analog reverb effect for the Anasounds Element spring reverb pedal. Rather than building the springs into the pedal, Anasounds keeps the tank separate and connects it by a cable, so the springs can live under the pedalboard or on top of it while the pedal itself stays small. La Brute is the middle size of the three tanks Anasounds makes for the Element, between Le Bon and Le Truand1.

What it is and how it connects

The Element pedal is a spring reverb that uses an actual spring tank, and the tank is a required part of the setup. Anasounds puts it plainly: "This tank is mandatory because it is the one that allows to generate an analog effect of reverb"1. The pedal carries the drive and recovery circuitry, and the tank carries the springs.

Connection is straightforward. "There's a mini jack to plug on the back of the pedal. Then, it will be connected to the box full of springs"1, using RCA connectors at the tank end. Because "the tank is detached from the pedal, and connected by a cable"1, the tank sits away from the pedal itself, with the cable carrying the signal between the two.

The Element pedal and the tank are separate purchases. Anasounds also sells a La Brute bundle that includes an Element pedal, a tank, and a mini jack to RCA cable, plus two self-drilled screws for mounting the tank under a pedalboard2.

Size and mounting

The La Brute spring tank is listed at 99,00 EUR1, and the listed weight is 0,01 kg1. It is the detached-tank half of the Element arrangement: the springs sit away from the pedal while the control unit stays on the board.

La Brute, Le Bon and Le Truand

Anasounds offers three tank sizes for the Element, and the choice is mostly about size and character14:

TankPosition in the rangeWhat Anasounds says
Le BonSmallest of the threeThe starting tank for the Element4
La BruteMiddle choice"It provides much more harmonics than its friend Le Bon."5
Le TruandLargest of the threeBigger springs, bigger footprint4

Pedal of the Day, reviewing the Element bundle, summed up the range: "The tanks, Le Bon, La Brute and Le Truand, vary in size, as do their springs, to create a wide sonic reverberated palette"4. The same review noted that you "might need a big board for Le Truand"4, which is where La Brute's middle size earns its keep: more harmonics than Le Bon, but still sized to tuck under a board.

Where it fits in Anasounds' range

The La Brute is one of Anasounds' spring tanks, listed at 99,00 EUR1. If you want the springs off the board, the Element plus a separate tank like the La Brute is that arrangement; the one-box alternative in the range is La Grotte, the Third Man Hardware signature pedal6.

Questions

What is the difference between La Brute, Le Bon and Le Truand?

They are the three tank sizes Anasounds makes for the Element reverb pedal. Le Bon is the smallest, Le Truand is the largest, and La Brute is the middle choice. Anasounds says La Brute provides much more harmonics than Le Bon, and its average size fits under a pedalboard, while Le Truand might need a big board.

Does La Brute work without an Anasounds Element?

No. The tank is the box of springs that generates the analog reverb effect, and the Element pedal drives it. Anasounds describes the tank as mandatory because it is what allows the analog reverb to be generated, and the two connect by a mini jack to RCA cable.

How does La Brute connect to the Element pedal?

There is a mini jack to plug in on the back of the Element pedal, and the cable then connects to the tank with RCA connectors. Because the tank is detached from the pedal and connected by a cable, it can be hidden under the pedalboard or kept on top of the board.

How big is the La Brute spring tank?

Anasounds lists the La Brute tank at 23.5 x 8.4 x 4 cm, or 9 x 3.2 x 1.6 inches.

Can the tank sit under the pedalboard?

Yes. MusicRadar described the tanks as the first designed to be mounted on top of or beneath a pedalboard, and Anasounds says the La Brute's average size fits under a pedalboard, next to the power supply block. The bundle includes self-drilled screws for screwing the tank under the board.
