The Attic Audio Transparent Overdrive is a drive/boost pedal built on the Klon circuit topology, made by Attic Audio designer Luke in Malta (EU). It arrived with a twist: it was presented as an April Fool's novelty, dressed in an enclosure and graphic styled like a Big Muff fuzz, with a Klon-style overdrive and boost circuit hiding inside1.

The April Fool's story

Luke of Attic Audio has a habit of marking April 1st with something unusual. As he put it, "Just like every year I try to celebrate April Fool's with the pedal community by coming up with a funny or absurd produc[t]". The Transparent Overdrive was that product for 2024: a Klon-style circuit presented in a Big Muff-style enclosure and graphic, so the pedal looks like a fuzz but behaves like a transparent drive and boost1.

The enclosure and graphic mimic a Big Muff, but the circuit inside is a Klon-style overdrive and boost, not a fuzz1.

Circuit and controls

Luke describes the circuit plainly: "My version of the Klon is similar to most replicas out there (same circuit topology)." In his build the clipping is handled by D9E diodes, the diode choice associated with the original Klon-type design1. The pedal runs in a compact 1590BB enclosure and is true bypass, so it stays out of your signal chain when off1.

As for what it does to a sound, Pedal of the Day's review found that while "this circuitry is nothing new, it really pushes your amp, adding that magical sparkle to your tone that we're all chasing", and judged that it sounds pretty damn good for the money, pushing the amp and adding sparkle without costing $5,000 or more1.

How it sits among transparent overdrives

The Transparent Overdrive belongs to a family of Klon-style and "transparent" drives that other makers approach differently:

  • The Adag Audio Seagull is billed as a "High Headroom Transparent Overdrive", with a black version Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson found more appealing than the original tan one; he was "certainly a fan of how it sounds in the Brett Demo" and "would definitely not mind owning one"2.
  • The Charlie Paolo Custom Effects Sapphire offers four diode clipping options, each adding its own distinct character, a wider spread of voicings than the Attic pedal's single D9E arrangement12.

Questions

Is the Attic Audio Transparent Overdrive a real Klon?

No. Designer Luke of Attic Audio describes it as his version of the Klon, similar to most replicas in that it uses the same circuit topology. It is a Klon-style circuit rather than an original Klon or an exact copy, and it uses D9E diodes in his build.

Is the Attic Audio Transparent Overdrive true bypass?

Yes. Pedal of the Day reports that the pedal is true bypass, housed in a compact 1590BB enclosure, so it passes your guitar's signal straight through when switched off.

Where is the Attic Audio Transparent Overdrive made?

The pedal is made in Malta, in the European Union, according to designer Luke of Attic Audio as reported by Pedal of the Day.

What diodes does the Attic Audio Transparent Overdrive use?

Luke of Attic Audio states that his version uses D9E diodes for clipping, the same kind of germanium-style diode choice associated with Klon-type circuits.

Was the Attic Audio Transparent Overdrive a joke product?

It began as one. Luke says he celebrates April Fool's each year with a funny or absurd product for the pedal community, and this pedal was presented in an enclosure and graphic styled like a Big Muff, hiding a Klon-style circuit inside.
