The Beetronics Royal Jelly Limited Edition "Wonka" is a five-piece limited run of the Royal Jelly, Beetronics' overdrive/fuzz blender pedal. Like every Royal Jelly, it runs an overdrive circuit and a fuzz circuit in parallel, so you can blend the two, lean on one, or use them separately1. Beetronics describes it as "a pedal that can change your approach to overdrive and fuzz"1.
The Wonka edition is sold out at the maker's store, where it was listed at £223.001. It is hand made in California1.
Overdrive and fuzz in parallel, blended or separate
What sets the Royal Jelly apart from a standard overdrive or fuzz pedal is its topology. Instead of stacking gain stages in series, it runs two circuits side by side: one overdrive, one fuzz. Beetronics says it "can cover any ground from overdrive to fuzz, running two circuits in parallel and giving you the possibility of blending it or having them separately"1.
For a player, that means one box can serve as a clean-ish overdrive, a full fuzz, or a hybrid voice that neither circuit alone produces. The maker's own sound description for the Royal Jelly family is that "it delivers everything from silky buzz to gritty sting"2. Pedal of the Day, reviewing the Royal Jelly in 2019, summed up its range as a strength:
"Able to fit right in with guitar, bass, drums, synth or anything else in the studio"
The same review called the Royal Jelly "an overdrive/fuzz blender like no other pedal," the phrase Beetronics itself uses across the line13.
The controls: Dry, EQ, Buzz, Queen and King
The Wonka carries the same control set as the rest of the Royal Jelly family14.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| DRY | Blends in your dry signal; on guitar, Beetronics says it creates clean tones with a fuzzy background1 |
| EQ | 10dB of cut/boost for HI and LO, for shaping the tone1 |
| BUZZ | A switch that adds the nasty high end usually found on vintage fuzz boxes to the fuzz circuit1 |
| Queen / King | Two presets of the overdrive/fuzz blend, giving two distinct sounds1 |
The Queen and King presets are the practical heart of the pedal for live use: dial in two different blends of the parallel circuits and switch between them on the fly. Beetronics describes them as "two presets of the blend, called Queen and King"1.
The DRY control is also what makes the pedal useful beyond guitar. Because the untouched signal can be mixed back in, low end survives heavy fuzz settings, which is why Beetronics calls it "a great feature for bass, drums and synths or any studio use"1. Pedal of the Day's reviewer reached the same conclusion about the Royal Jelly's versatility across instruments3.
A five-piece edition of the Royal Jelly
The Wonka is one of the smallest Royal Jelly runs: exactly 5 pieces1. Beetronics' product page lists it as sold out1. Physically it matches the standard Royal Jelly, at 6-1/8" x 5-1/16" x 2-3/4" and 2lbs / 1kg, with a package size of 7-1/2" x 6-1/4" x 3-1/4" and package weight of 2.5lbs / 1.25 kg1.
Beetronics backs the pedal with a 30-Day Hive Happiness Guarantee (shipping not included), and a 14-Day Hive Happiness Guarantee heading also appears on the page; worn or incomplete returns may carry a restocking fee of 15% or be refunded as store credit1.
The Wonka requires a 9V DC center negative power supply, and no power supply is included with the pedal1. There is no battery option in the maker's listing.
Other limited editions of the Royal Jelly
The Wonka sits in a long line of Royal Jelly limited editions, most of them also sold out. Named editions from Beetronics' own product pages include156:
Many of these limited editions are no longer available. The Royal Jelly OD/Fuzz Limited Edition is listed as sold out657, as is the Royal Jelly Limited Edition657, and the Valentine Limited Edition Royal Series is likewise sold out7. The standard Royal Jelly Limited Edition run has also sold out5.
All of them share the same circuit, controls and 9V DC center negative power requirement as the Wonka186910117121314151617181920212223242526. The differences between editions are the finish and the size of the run; the Wonka's five pieces make it one of the scarcest.
What reviewers said
