The Bleak District Electric Terra Earthly Overdriver is an overdrive pedal from British maker Bleak District Electric, designed by Phil and launched in July 2024. Delicious Audio describes it as "Inspired by both the Tube Screamer and the Klon", and it sits in the company of modern overdrive pedals that offer a wide range of dirt tones from a single box. Its price was listed at £145 when Guitar.com reviewed it in October 202412.
A hybrid Tube Screamer and Klon overdrive
At its core the Terra is built on a high-quality RC4558 op-amp, the same chip family found in the Tube Screamer lineage. The clipping is hybrid: asymmetrical silicon diodes sit in the soft-clipping position and germanium diodes handle hard clipping3. Delicious Audio describes the circuit as "a hybrid circuit featuring both Germanium and Silicon diodes"2. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson reported that Phil described the circuit to him "as a sort of mashup of a Tube Screamer and DOD250 - with some extra" bits of his own3.
The pedal's full name, Earthly Overdriver, reflects how it is voiced. Guitar.com's Richard Purvis wrote that "which is probably why Bleak District calls the Terra an 'earthly overdriver'", pointing to its grounded, organic character1.
The controls
The Terra is operated "through a unique 5-knob interface"2. Guitar Pedal X lists the control set as Volume, Gain with up to +40dB, a notched 8-way low frequency filter, a JFET-buffered unfiltered clean blend with boost, and top-end smoothing34.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Volume | Sets output level34 |
| Gain (two yellow knobs) | Gain level is controlled via the two yellow knobs, up to +40dB23 |
| Character (unlabeled yellow rotary) | 8-position rotary controlling a low-pass filter placed in front of the gain stage2 |
| Clean | Reintegrates the unaffected signal for a less compressed, more dynamic sound2 |
| Smooth | Clockwise cleans up muddy frequencies to let top-end harmonics shine; anti-clockwise delivers a warmer tone2 |
The Character knob is the pedal's most distinctive control. Because the low-pass filter sits before the gain stage, it shapes what gets driven rather than what comes out after: "It can change the resulting tone quite drastically by sculpting the lower frequencies in eight different ways"2. Guitar Pedal X describes the same feature as an "8 way, notched low frequency input filter" that "voices it from tight and focused to warm and fuzzy"3.
The Character rotary is unlabeled on the pedal itself, so it is worth learning the eight positions by ear.
What reviewers said
Guitar Pedal X's verdict at launch was warm: "The Terra is a really cool, actually a rather warm organic overdrive with distinctive character and a lot of versatility"3. The pedal also appeared in Guitar Pedal X's 2024 round-up of new boost and overdrive pedals of the year4.
Guitar.com's Richard Purvis reviewed it in October 2024 and concluded that "this is a fine crunch machine that sounds especially good at lower-gain settings and offers exceptional tonal tweakability"1. He placed it among "high-quality drive pedals with extra tonal flexibility"1.
Bleak District Electric has since expanded its range of gain pedals around the Terra, including the Sun? Never Double T Preamp and the Wondertow multi-effect.

Questions
What does the Character knob on the Terra do?
The unlabeled yellow Character knob is an eight-position rotary controlling a low-pass filter placed in front of the gain stage. By sculpting the lower frequencies in eight different ways, it can change the resulting tone quite drastically, voicing the pedal from tight and focused to warm and fuzzy.
Does the Bleak District Terra use germanium diodes?
Yes. The Terra is a hybrid clipping circuit featuring both germanium and silicon diodes: asymmetrical silicon diodes sit in the soft-clipping position and germanium diodes handle hard clipping, built around an RC4558 op-amp.
Does the Terra have a clean blend?
Yes. The Clean knob lets you reintegrate the unaffected signal alongside the driven signal, which produces a less compressed and more dynamic sound. Guitar Pedal X describes it as a JFET-buffered, unfiltered clean blend with boost.
Where is the Bleak District Terra made?
Guitar.com describes the Terra as a British-built pedal. It was available to order from the Bleak District webstore when Guitar Pedal X covered its launch in July 2024.
