The Blue FX Fuzz Field is an analog fuzz pedal from Danish maker Blue FX Devices, and it is not built to sit still. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio describes it as "a daring experiment in interactive analog fuzz": a fuzz whose sound is constantly being shaped by an internal modulation engine that follows the dynamics of your playing, presenting itself as a "playable and interactive modulated fuzz pedal" rather than a static distortion1. It belongs to the wider family of fuzz pedals.
What it does
At its core the Fuzz Field is a two-stage silicon transistor fuzz feeding a MOSFET circuit1. On top of that sits what the maker calls its built-in, always-on modulation engine, which uses an envelope follower to constantly manipulate the sound1. An envelope follower reads how hard you play and turns that into movement within the pedal, so the modulation tracks your picking rather than running on a fixed clock.
The pedal offers three modulation voices, which between them function as a combined fuzz, phaser/vibrato, hi/lo octaver, and harmonic oscillator1. That puts phaser, vibrato and octave-pitch style effects inside one fuzz box, all driven by the same dynamic engine.
Operation is through dual multi-function footswitches with tap, hold and double-click actions1, so a good deal of the pedal's behavior lives in how you press rather than in rows of knobs.
"While its learning curve is steep and its sounds are deliberately untamed"
Reviewers describe the Fuzz Field as having a steep learning curve and deliberately untamed sounds1. Players used to a conventional set-and-leave fuzz should expect to spend time with it before the voices behave predictably.
