The Boss FRV-1 is a compact reverb pedal that recreates the tube-driven 1963 Fender Spring Reverb, the unit whose sound launched the surf-music phenomenon and became a staple of rockabilly, country and blues. Boss and Fender teamed up on the pedal, with Fender licensing the "Fender Reverb" name, and Boss says the FRV-1 recreates the classic spring-reverb sound of the 1963 edition using its patented COSM modeling technology. There is no actual spring inside: it is a digital recreation in a stompbox12.

What it does

The FRV-1 puts the Fender spring reverb sound under your foot in a tough, reliable compact pedal, according to Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio, who calls it "a classic reborn: the legendary sound of the 1963 Fender Spring Reverb returns as a modern stompbox"2. Because the reverb is modeled rather than mechanical, it behaves like a normal pedal on a board, with none of the weight or fragility of a spring tank.

MusicRadar's reviewer Simon Bradley was direct about the modeling approach: "Obviously, there's no genuine spring used here, but that said, the pedal is, tonally, incredibly convincing"3. His verdict on the pedal in use: "for general gigging and recording, this is as authentic as it's likely to get," though he noted that balancing the pedal's tone with the dry amp signal involves a compromise overall3.

Controls

The FRV-1 carries three controls, described by Premier Guitar as the classic set, allowing for additional versatility1:

ControlWhat it does
DwellShapes the character of the modeled spring reverb1
ToneAdjusts the reverb's tone1
MixBlends the reverb with the dry signal1

Where it came from

Premier Guitar reported the pedal's announcement in June 2009, with the FRV-1 expected to be available in late July of that year1. It was part of a small line of Fender-licensed Boss pedals: Fender licensed "Fender Bassman" to the Boss FBM-1 and "Fender Deluxe Reverb" to related Boss pedals, with the FRV-1 carrying the "Fender Reverb" license2.

The FRV-1 is out of production. Writing in 2022, De Gregorio noted that although it is discontinued, it is "still considered one of the best digital spring reverbs on the market"2.

Who it suits

Boss designed the FRV-1 for maximum versatility with the sound of rockabilly, country, blues, surf rock and even grunge rock in mind1. The Fender spring reverb it models later became commonplace in grunge and other modern genres, so the pedal reaches beyond its vintage source material2. Players looking for a current Boss reverb with a wider palette can find the company's later designs on the Reverb Pedals page, including the Boss RV-6 Digital Reverb, the Boss RV-500 Reverb and the Boss RV-200.

Boss publishes the FRV-1 owner's manual, in eight languages, on its product support pages4.

Questions

Does the Boss FRV-1 use a real spring?

No. The FRV-1 is a digital pedal that models the 1963 Fender Spring Reverb using Boss's COSM technology rather than housing a physical spring tank. MusicRadar's reviewer, Simon Bradley, noted that there is no genuine spring used, but found the pedal tonally incredibly convincing all the same.

Which Fender amp does the Boss FRV-1 model?

The FRV-1 models the 1963 Fender Spring Reverb, the outboard tube-driven reverb unit whose sound became the signature of surf music and a staple of rockabilly, country and blues. Boss developed it in collaboration with Fender USA as an officially licensed recreation.

What does the Dwell control do on the FRV-1?

The FRV-1 carries three controls: Dwell, Tone and Mix. Boss describes the set as allowing additional versatility, letting the player shape how the modeled spring reverb sits in the sound alongside the tone and the reverb mix.

Who made the Boss FRV-1?

The FRV-1 was made by Boss in a collaboration with Fender. Fender licensed the Fender Reverb name to Boss for the pedal, which recreates the '63 Fender Reverb via Boss's COSM technology.

What styles of music is the FRV-1 aimed at?

Boss designed the FRV-1 for maximum versatility with rockabilly, country, blues, surf rock and even grunge rock in mind. The Fender spring reverb sound it models launched the surf-music phenomenon and later became commonplace in grunge and other modern genres.
