The Boss OD-3 OverDrive is a compact overdrive pedal made by Boss, released in 1997 and still in production as of Guitar World's 2021 history of Boss analog overdrives1. It sits in the line that began with the Boss OD-1 of 1977, and Delicious Audio describes it as the third generation of the revered OD-1, but with more controls23.

Where many overdrives color the midrange, the OD-3 takes a different approach. Guitar World notes that the OD-3 produces a transparent, flat EQ response1, and Delicious Audio describes its sound as warm and dynamic, with increased dynamics yielding a "bigger" sound than any previous Boss overdrive pedal2.

What the OD-3 does

The OD-3 gives guitarists a greatly expanded range of smooth overdrive tones, with straightforward Drive, Tone and Level controls2. That three-knob layout is the same count as the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive, but the circuit underneath is a different design.

ControlWhat it does
DriveSets the amount of overdrive2
ToneShapes the high end against the pedal's flat EQ response2
LevelSets the output volume1

Guitar World singles out that flat EQ response when placing the pedal among the Boss overdrive family1. Where the OD-1 and SD-1 push the midrange, the OD-3 leaves the amp's character more intact, which is what reviewers mean when they call it transparent.

Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio also hears a family resemblance to the most famous overdrive of all, writing2:

"It sounds like a refined version of the Ibanez Tube Screamer"2

That is a description of the sound, not the circuit. The OD-3 has been described as sounding like a refined version of the Ibanez Tube Screamer (compare it with the SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9), but its circuit uses differential transistor pairs rather than that approach24.

The circuit: differential transistor pairs

The OD-3's gain stage is built on differential transistor pairs, a topology Boss used in only a handful of circuits, including the OD-3 and the BD-2 Blues Driver4. Aion FX, whose Charon overdrive project adapts the approach, notes that Boss uses differentials in circuits such as the BD-2 and OD-34. This is what separates the OD-3 from op-amp-based overdrives like the OD-1, whose early version used a 14-pin RC3403 op-amp before Boss moved to dual op-amps such as the JRC4558DD32.

Twin Drive Mods Edition and DIY versions

Boss has also issued a Twin Drive Mods Edition of the OD-3, a variant of the standard pedal5. Its addition is a Compression switch with three positions, More, Stock and Most5. The pedal is otherwise exactly as the standard OD-3 came, with its clear knobs5.

The Twin Drive Mods Edition is a variant of the standard OD-3 rather than a new design, with the Compression switch as its addition5.

Where it sits in the Boss line

The OD-3's increased dynamics yield a "bigger" sound than any previous BOSS overdrive pedal, according to Boss2. Its sound is often described as warm and dynamic1, and it carries the Boss five-year warranty2.

Questions

Is the Boss OD-3 based on a Tube Screamer?

No. The OD-3 is not a Tube Screamer copy, though Delicious Audio notes that it sounds like a refined version of the Ibanez Tube Screamer. Its circuit is built differently, using differential transistor pairs, a topology Boss also used in the BD-2 Blues Driver, rather than the op-amp clipping stage of a Tube Screamer.

Is the Boss OD-3 still made?

Yes. Guitar World reported in 2021 that the OD-3 Over Drive, which appeared in 1997, is still in production, making it one of the longest-running overdrive pedals in the Boss compact line.

What transistors does the OD-3 circuit use?

The OD-3 uses differential transistor pairs, a topology Boss used in a handful of circuits including the BD-2 and OD-3, according to Aion FX. DIY builders reproducing the circuit as a SubClone typically use J201 JFETs, with 2N5457 or similar transistors as a substitute.

When did the Boss OD-3 come out?

The OD-3 Over Drive appeared in 1997, according to Guitar World. It is the third generation of the OD-1, Boss's first overdrive pedal, which was produced from 1977 to 1985.
