The Boss RE-2 Space Echo is a compact delay pedal that digitally recreates the sound of the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the tape-based echo and reverb unit Roland built starting in 197412. Released in April 2022 alongside the larger Boss RE-202 Space Echo, it distills the RE-201 experience into a standard Boss compact enclosure, with 11 echo modes, three virtual tape heads, spring reverb, stereo ins and outs, and a Wow & Flutter control for the pitch wobble of a real tape machine345. Boss says the pedal was adapted for a more pedalboard-oriented approach, and it was made to replace the Boss RE-20 Space Echo, taking up about a third as much floor space16.
Where the original RE-201 pushed audio through a loop of tape, the RE-2 models those attributes digitally. Boss says the RE-2 and RE-202 are based on in-depth analysis of numerous original Roland RE-201 units, and that the new sound engine offers its "most meticulous recreation yet" of the classic RE-201 sound16. The payoff for a player is the Space Echo sound without tape maintenance: as Gearnews put it at launch, "If you love the original Roland Space Echo, you can get a really great sound here. Plus, without any of the hassle of tape"7.
The controls: four knobs, seven functions
The RE-2 squeezes seven controls onto its panel using stacked, dual-function knobs, so there are only four physical knobs711. The 11-position mode selector chooses from 11 echo types, giving access to three virtual tape heads that can be used with or without the spring reverb78. Independent level knobs balance the echo and reverb blend8.
| Control | Outer dial | Inner dial |
|---|---|---|
| Echo/Reverb | Reverb level | Echo level |
| Intensity/Tone | Tone | Intensity (feedback) |
| Repeat Rate/Wow & Flutter | Wow & Flutter | Repeat Rate |
| Mode | 11-position mode selector |
The stacked pots are the trick: Gearnews counted "a total of 7 controls accessible via staked pots, so only four physical knobs"7. Boss's own history article describes the panel the same way, with the 11-position mode selector plus knobs for repeat rate, intensity, echo/reverb blend, and Wow & Flutter11.
Beyond the knobs, the footswitch handles on/off plus an additional "set speed" function for tap-style tempo entry7. MusicRadar's launch coverage also lists extended delay time, selectable carryover (whether repeats continue briefly when you switch the effect off), stereo I/O, and tap tempo8. Maximum repeat time is two seconds1.
Power and connections
The RE-2 runs on a 9V battery or a 9-volt power supply, with the AC adaptor sold separately1011. Boss's Paul White called this "very pedalboard-friendly"10. The pedal has stereo inputs and stereo outputs, unlike the mono original RE-201, plus a Ctl/Exp jack for connecting external switches or an expression pedal1012. Guitar World's spec sheet lists the connections as Stereo In, Stereo Out, and Ctl/Exp in12.
The RE-2 uses buffered bypass, with no switch to true bypass7. Players building a chain around true-bypass pedals should factor that in.
On MIDI, the record is split. MusicRadar's 2022 launch news stated that "The RE-2 also supports control via external footswitches, an expression pedal, or MIDI"8. But a later Boss article by Paul White, reviewing how to maximize the RE-202 and RE-2, states plainly: "As such, it has no MIDI, programmability, or alternative reverb types"101. The two accounts disagree, so if MIDI control is essential to your rig, verify against the current manual before buying.
Where it comes from: the Roland RE-201
The RE-2 traces back to the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, first made by Boss's parent company Roland in 19742. The RE-201 used a tape loop with multiple playback heads, and its echo modes, spring reverb, and tape wobble defined the "Space Echo" sound that producers still chase. Boss first recreated it in pedal form with the RE-20 Twin Pedal in 2007, described at launch as Roland's classic RE-201 "reborn" as a Boss pedal13.
Boss says both new Space Echo pedals came from in-depth analysis of numerous original RE-201 units1. The RE-2's 11 delay modes are based on the original three-head configuration of the RE-201, and its three virtual heads match the RE-201's echo modes, with reverb active on only modes 5 to 11514.
The RE-2 next to the RE-202 and RE-20
The RE-2 and the RE-202 share the same sound engine, but the compact pedal trades features for size. Guitar World's comparison notes that "the smaller RE-2 only has three virtual heads and has 11 modes that match the RE-201's echo modes (with reverb on only modes 5 to 11)," while the RE-202 carries the fuller feature set5. The RE-2 has no programmability or alternative reverb types10. What it keeps, according to Boss, is "the same superb sound quality and stereo ins and outs in a compact pedal format"10.
What reviewers said
Published reviewers were broadly positive, with the recurring theme being authenticity of the tape character in a practical package15416.
- MusicRadar's Phil Barker: "It gets those classic sounds bang on."15
- Premier Guitar's reviewer concluded "the RE-2 is an engaging, flexible, and very practical delay with a lot of personality."4
- Guitar.com's Cillian Breathnach wrote that "The RE-2 plonks the excellent tapey warble of the original into Boss' indestructible compact pedal format."16
- Gearnews at launch: a really great sound for lovers of the original Space Echo, without the hassle of tape and tape mechanisms7.
"the RE-2 is an engaging, flexible, and very practical delay with a lot of personality"
Boss's Paul White also suggested uses beyond guitar, recommending the pedals on drums "to get everything from 'Instant Karma' slapback to Stewart Copeland-style snare repeats"10.
That Pedal Show covered the RE-2 and RE-202 in a multi-head tape delay episode comparing them with the original RE-201, finding the emulation faithful to the famous Roland unit's character3.

Questions
Is the Boss RE-2 true bypass?
No. The RE-2 uses a buffered bypass, with no switch to true bypass. This is standard for Boss compact pedals and keeps the signal path consistent when the effect is off, though players who insist on true bypass in their chain should take note.
Does the Boss RE-2 run on batteries?
Yes. The RE-2 runs on a 9V battery or a 9-volt power supply, which Boss describes as making it very pedalboard-friendly. The AC adaptor is sold separately, so battery power is a genuine option if you do not want to carry a supply.
Is the Boss RE-2 stereo?
Yes. The RE-2 has stereo inputs and stereo outputs, unlike the mono original Roland RE-201. Guitar World's spec list also shows a Ctl/Exp input for external switches or an expression pedal.
Does the Boss RE-2 have MIDI?
MusicRadar's 2022 launch coverage said the RE-2 supports control via external footswitches, an expression pedal, or MIDI. A later Boss article by Paul White states the pedal has no MIDI, programmability, or alternative reverb types. The two accounts conflict, so MIDI control cannot be stated as a firm feature of the pedal.
What is the difference between the Boss RE-2 and RE-202?
The RE-2 is the compact version. It has three virtual tape heads and 11 modes matching the RE-201's echo modes, with reverb active only on modes 5 to 11, and no programmability or alternative reverb types. The larger RE-202 carries the fuller feature set. The RE-2 takes up about a third of the RE-20's floor space.
