The Boss DD-2 Digital Delay, released in 1983, was the first compact digital delay pedal. Where digital delay had previously lived in studio rack units, the DD-2 put it on a pedalboard, and Boss itself calls it "nothing short of a revelation: the world's first compact digital delay"1. It offered clean, precise repeats and much longer delay times than the analog delays that preceded it2.
What makes the DD-2 of lasting interest to players is its circuit. At its heart was a dedicated delay chip taken from the Roland SDE-3000 Digital Delay rack unit, a high-end studio piece, which gave a compact pedal the engine of a professional rack delay1. The pedal has been out of production for decades and is now a secondhand purchase, with Guitar World's 2025 look at Joe Bonamassa's pedalboard noting an interchangeable DD-2 at circa $200 secondhand3.
The chip from the SDE-3000
The DD-2's defining feature is its delay chip. Boss states that "at the DD-2's heart was a dedicated delay chip originating from the acclaimed Roland SDE-3000 Digital Delay rack unit"1. Guitar World's history of the pedal identifies it specifically: the DD-2 contained the same 63H101 CMOS gate array IC, known as the "long chip," as the SDE-30008. The same source reports that early iterations of the DD-3 contain the same 63H101 chip, so the circuit carried directly across the transition9.
The press has consistently picked up on this lineage. Guitar World's review of the SDE-3 notes that "the original 80s DD-2 delay... also used the same bespoke IC chip as the original SDE-3000"10, and its DD-3T/DD-200 review says the DD-2 "featured the exact same IC as the one found in Roland's flagship (at the time) SDE-3000 digital delay studio rack unit"11. Coda Effects puts it plainly: the DD-2 "is based on the chip that had been engineered for a delay in rack format produced by Roland at the time, the SDE-3000"51.
The conversion is 12-bit, which MusicRadar's delay pedal guide suggests is part of the appeal of the DD-2 and DD-3 for players who chase their sound7. Analog Man goes further, saying the DD-2 and older DD-3 pedals "used an awesome chip from the high end Roland rack delay units, they sound excellent, so good that Pete Cornish uses them in his mega dollar custom units"12.
"At the DD-2's heart was a dedicated delay chip originating from the acclaimed Roland SDE-3000 Digital Delay rack unit."
Frequency response
Boss describes "a narrower 'vintage digital' frequency response of 40Hz to 7kHz"1. Guitar World's 2026 history of the DD-2 and DD-3 reports a "lower frequency response of 10Hz to 8kHz (compared to the 3000's 17kHz upper range)"89, and its SDE-3000 feature repeats the 10Hz to 8kHz figure, adding that "the shorter maximum delay time and lower 10Hz to 8kHz frequency response aren't as impressive" as the rack unit's91. Whichever figure you take, the DD-2's response is narrower than the SDE-3000's, which is part of what players hear as its vintage digital character.
Where it sits in the Boss delay line
The DD-2 arrived in 1983 as one of the first compact digital delays, and MusicRadar's DD-500 review recalls that "back in 1983, Boss was the first company to cram the miracle of digital delay into a stompbox with the DD-2"6. JHS's history of delay calls it "the first ever digital compact pedal"13.
It was later replaced by the DD-3, which Delicious Audio describes as "based on the DD-2, the world's first digital delay pedal from 1983" and revered for its warm, round delay tone14. The DD-3's own history shows the circuit drifting over time: MusicRadar's FX Files on the DD-3 reports that on a later iteration "the delay chip once again changed, while the PCB was redesigned to a more modern double-sided board" with SMD components15. So the DD-2 and the earliest DD-3s share the SDE-3000-derived long chip, while later DD-3s do not, which is why players tracking the vintage circuit care about the distinction.
The DD-2's place in the wider Boss delay line runs from the analog DM-2 before it, through the DD-3 and its successors, to modern pedals like the DD-3T and the SDE-3, which Guitar World notes recreates the SDE-3000 sound in a compact stereo pedal10. For a player today, the DD-2 is a secondhand vintage piece: Joe Bonamassa keeps one on his pedalboard as an interchangeable delay3.

Questions
Was the Boss DD-2 the first digital delay pedal?
Yes. Boss unveiled the DD-2 in 1983 as the world's first compact digital delay pedal, and multiple publications describe it as the first stompbox digital delay. It was the first pedal to put digital delay, previously the territory of rack units, into a compact effects pedal format1166.
What replaced the Boss DD-2?
The Boss DD-3 replaced the DD-2 in the Boss compact delay line. Early iterations of the DD-3 contained the same 63H101 IC long chip as the DD-2, so the circuit lineage carried over before later versions moved to different delay chips and redesigned boards389.
How much current does the Boss DD-2 draw?
The DD-2 draws 65mA at 9V DC, center negative. That is a healthy draw for its era, so plan on a dedicated power supply or an isolated output4.
What is the frequency response of the Boss DD-2?
Sources disagree. Boss describes a narrower vintage digital frequency response of 40Hz to 7kHz, while Guitar World's history of the pedal reports 10Hz to 8kHz. Both accounts agree the response is narrower than the SDE-3000 rack unit's 17kHz upper range189.
