The Roland Space Echo is a tape echo and delay unit that records your instrument to a loop of magnetic tape and plays it back, producing repeats with the warm, slightly unstable character that only moving tape gives. Roland introduced the best-known model, the RE-201, in 1974, and it became one of the most widely used tape delays of the 1970s and 1980s, alongside units like the Maestro Echoplex12. Premier Guitar describes it as "a tape echo/delay effect that gained popularity in the 1970s and '80s," known for "its distinctive rhythmic echo sounds, warm character, and highly playable sonic quirks"234.

The Space Echo is no longer made. Roland ended production decades ago, and it now survives as a sought-after used unit, with vintage prices that reflect its reputation526.

A tape delay unit from the 1970s

Tape echo was the dominant studio and stage delay technology before digital delay arrived. Dedicated delay units such as the Echoplex and the Roland Space Echo used magnetic tape for their echoes: your signal is recorded onto the tape by a record head, then read back by one or more playback heads spaced along the tape path, and the spacing of those heads sets the basic delay time12. Tape delay units like the Roland Space Echo and the Maestro Echoplex became notable in the 1970s13.

The Space Echo's place in that lineage is well documented. BOSS's own delay history calls the RE-201, first introduced in 1974, "widely regarded as the premier tape-based delay" unit of its kind1. Guitar World's history of the Space Echo notes that its Repeat Rate control sets the delay time, and that this is effectively a tape speed control: turning it changes how fast the loop runs, which changes both the delay time and the pitch character of the repeats7.

The Space Echo was designed by Ikutaro Kakehashi, Roland's founder, and grew out of the earlier Ace Tone EC-1 Echo Chamber11. Pedal of the Day's history adds that Kakehashi built several echo models, with the RE-201 becoming the famous one14.

How the tape loop works

The Space Echo's tape transport is what sets it apart from other tape echoes. It used standard 1/4 inch tape of the kind designed to spool onto tape reels, but the unit itself used no reels of any kind: the tape is transported via a capstan drive, with the loop moving freely inside the machine15. Letting the tape move freely instead of winding it on reels cut down on tape noise, wear, and wow and flutter, the pitch wobble that afflicts tape machines14.

BOSS says the RE-201's longer tape loop and a mechanism that significantly reduced tape wear made it "a mile" ahead of what came before in durability terms3. That mattered because tape loops wear out. The loop inside a Space Echo can be replaced, and an extensive range of replacement parts and service kits is available from Echo Fix, including replacement RT-1L tape loops made for the RE-201, RE-150, RE-301, RE-501 and SRE-555, plus tape path felt kits111617.

Owning a vintage Space Echo means maintenance. The tape loop is a wear item that eventually needs replacing, and Echo Fix sells full service kits with new loops, felts and rollers for several Space Echo models1116.

Controls and connections

The RE-201's front panel centers on its echo controls, with Repeat Rate acting as the tape speed and therefore delay time control7. On the input side, BOSS's history describes three inputs adjacent to a VU meter, two labeled Mic and the other Instrument, each with its own Volume knob, so you could feed three sources into the unit at once6. It also had a dedicated From PA input for hooking it up to a mixing desk311, and a footswitch input so you could engage the echo effect from a pedalboard11.

The unit is mono, a limitation its modern pedal descendants moved past: MusicRadar notes that while the RE-201 is mono, the Boss RE-202 provides true stereo I/O10.

The Space Echo range and the RE-201

The RE-201 is the model players mean when they say "Space Echo," but it sat within a wider range. MusicRadar's history of the unit dates the Space Echo range's launch to 1973, with Roland ceasing production of all Space Echo models in 199081. The range later went digital: Guitar World's timeline records the RE-3 and RE-5 Digital Space Echo units arriving in 19887. Other tape models included the RE-150, the RE-101, and the chorus-equipped RE-301 and RE-501 Chorus Echoes, all of which Echo Fix's replacement tape loops fit1718.

Exactly when the RE-201 itself ended is less clear. Premier Guitar states that Roland ceased production of the Space Echo entirely in 19852. BOSS's own history article says the RE-201 remained in production throughout the '70s and '80s and "remained available throughout until the '90s"63. Delicious Audio, citing BOSS material, says it was introduced in 1974 and produced for over 14 years19. What is not in dispute is that the RE-201 outlasted more technologically advanced alternatives for a remarkably long run36.

Who has used it

The Space Echo's user list reads like a history of the last fifty years of guitar music. Premier Guitar calls it "this iconic piece of equipment" and names Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead among the legendary musicians who have used it2. JHS Pedals' tape echo history names Brian Setzer and Radiohead as users20. Beyond guitar, bassist and producer Charlie Jones told BOSS: "I also have a Roland [RE-201] Space Echo in my studio, which I use on virtually everything"21.

On That Pedal Show, comparing a vintage RE-201 against the Echo Fix EF-X2 and other tape echoes, Mick and Dan found the original still holds its own2223:

What it costs today and what replaced it

The Space Echo is discontinued, and vintage prices reflect that. Anasounds notes a used price above $10005, while MusicRadar's review of the Boss RE-2 puts the price of a vintage unit at "around two grand"241.

Boss, Roland's effects brand, has kept the Space Echo's sound alive in pedal form. The Boss RE-20 Space Echo, released in 2007, used Boss's COSM technology to model the RE-2017, and Pedal of the Day's review called it an "amazing simulation of the famous Roland RE-201, with the spacious, analog tone of the original Space Echo"25. In 2022 Boss followed it with the flagship Boss RE-202 Space Echo and the compact Boss RE-2 Space Echo, both digital emulations built from in-depth analysis of numerous original RE-201 units, including a pristine example from the BOSS and Roland factory archive31926. MusicRadar described the RE-202 as "an advanced recreation of the sound of the legendary RE-201 Space Echo from the '70s and '80s"10. Universal Audio has also modeled the unit in software, calling it "the most authentic emulation of the classic mid-'70s analog Japanese ambience device"27.

For players who want the tape sound without a vintage unit, the delay pedals category now covers both the Boss recreations and other tape-style options.

Questions

Is the Roland Space Echo still made?

No. Roland stopped making the Space Echo in the late 1980s to early 1990s, and sources disagree on the exact end date: Premier Guitar says production of the Space Echo ceased in 1985, while BOSS's own history says the RE-201 remained available into the '90s and MusicRadar dates the end of all Space Echo models to 1990. Boss now makes digital pedal recreations, the RE-202 and RE-2.

Who has used the Roland Space Echo?

Players documented as using the Space Echo include Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, Brian Setzer, and Radiohead as a band, according to JHS Pedals and Premier Guitar. Bassist and producer Charlie Jones told BOSS he keeps an RE-201 in his studio and uses it on virtually everything he records.

Does the Roland Space Echo use tape?

Yes. The Space Echo records to a loop of standard 1/4 inch magnetic tape. Unlike a reel-to-reel machine it uses no reels at all: the tape moves freely and is driven by a capstan, which cut down on tape noise, wear, and wow and flutter. The loop can be replaced, and Echo Fix sells replacement loops and service kits.

Is the Roland Space Echo a pedal?

No. The original Space Echo is a floor-standing tape echo unit with a footswitch input so you can switch the echo on from a pedalboard. Boss has since released pedal versions: the RE-20 in 2007, and the RE-202 and RE-2, which digitally model the RE-201's sound and behavior.
