The Boss RE-202 Space Echo is a digital delay and reverb pedal that recreates the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the 1970s tape echo and spring reverb unit that Boss's parent company Roland built and that has been out of production since 1990123. Rather than sampling a single unit, Boss says the RE-202 and its compact sibling, the RE-2, are "based on in depth analysis of numerous original Roland RE-201 Space Echo units," with digital modeling that Boss describes as replicating "the unique behavior of vintage analogue devices" at "unprecedented levels of realism"2.
For a player, that means the wobbly, multi-head tape repeats, the spring reverb and the fat preamp character of the original are all here without tape to replace or heads to clean, alongside things the original never had: 12 delay modes, modern reverb types, tap tempo, 127 preset slots, MIDI and stereo input and output245.
A digital recreation of the Roland RE-201 tape echo
The original Roland RE-201 Space Echo was a tape-based echo machine: a loop of tape running past record and playback heads, with a spring reverb and a preamp in the same box. Boss discontinued it in 19901, and original units are now vintage gear. The RE-202 approaches that machine with digital modeling rather than tape, and Boss's own article on the two pedals says they "offer extremely accurate emulations of the original RE-201 Space Echo attributes"13.
Two features aim the modeling at how a real RE-201 changes with age. A tape switch lets you choose between new and aged tape conditions, with the aged setting sounding slightly darker and more lo-fi2. There is also a Saturation control for dialing in the fat preamp distortion of the RE-2012, which Boss's history article describes as a way for contemporary players to get that RE-201 preamp character2.
The reverb side goes beyond the original. Alongside the classic short spring reverb of the RE-20113, the RE-202 offers hall, plate, room and ambience stereo reverb types13, and gearnews.com notes the spring reverb is "modeled after the original spring reverb from the RE-201"5.
The controls
The panel keeps the RE-201's control names and adds modern functions around them. Guitar World lists the control set as: Mode selector, Bass, Treble, Reverb Volume, Repeat Rate, Intensity, Echo Volume, Saturation, Wow & Flutter and Gain12.
| Control or switch | What it does |
|---|---|
| Mode selector | Chooses among 12 delay modes, built on the RE-201's three-head configuration512 |
| Repeat Rate, Intensity, Echo Volume | The core echo controls carried over from the RE-20112 |
| Bass and Treble knobs | Separate EQ for the effect2 |
| Saturation | Dials in RE-201-style preamp distortion2 |
| Wow & Flutter | Sets the tape wobble character12 |
| Tape switch | Selects new or aged tape conditions, the latter darker and more lo-fi4 |
| Input switch | Selects guitar- or line-level signals, for connecting keyboards and other gear4 |
The three footswitches do more than the originals ever could2:
- Left switch: turns delay and reverb on and off; holding it produces a Warp effect that adds endless feedback while depressed4.
- Center switch: chooses among four user presets; a longer press turns the reverb on or off independently of the delay4.
- Right switch: sets the tap-tempo rate; holding it down engages the Twist effect4.
On That Pedal Show, the hosts highlighted "really easy tap tempo" and the two expression controls, which connect via the Control 1, 2/expression inputs144. Pedal of the Day describes the Warp and Twist effects as letting you "launch the sound into outer space with the press of a footswitch while performing"15. There is also programmable memory with 127 preset slots25, and MIDI connectivity for external control2.
The RE-202 has no looper. On That Pedal Show, Mick Taylor and Daniel Steinhardt noted "no looper surprisingly" when going through the pedal's features16.
History: the RE-201, the RE-20 and the smaller RE-2
The RE-201 Space Echo was discontinued in 19901, but its sound stayed in demand. Boss first brought the Space Echo to pedal form with the RE-20 Space Echo, and then in 2022 launched two modern recreations at once: the flagship RE-202 and the compact RE-22914. In the U.S. they arrived at $399.99 and $249.99 respectively10.
The RE-2 is a compact stomp box, while the RE-202 is larger and built as a more complete recreation of the original Space Echo17. The RE-2 offers 11 delay modes based on the RE-201's three-head configuration, stereo in/out, and even the option to boost the signal through the emulated preamp52. The RE-202 goes further with three footswitches, 12 modes, 127 presets, the full EQ and Saturation control set, and MIDI25.
Guitar.com's reviewer also noted the physical design: the RE-202 is "a solid, weighty bit of kit" that nods to the form factor of the CE-1 Chorus Ensemble of 197618.
What reviewers said
Reviews of the RE-202 have been positive, with one recurring disagreement: whether it truly sounds like an original RE-201141912.
- Guitar World (Trevor Curwen): "Boss has got this just right: the RE-202 accurately reproduces Space Echo sound while going way beyond the capabilities" of an original RE-20112.
- gearnews.com (Julian Schmauch): "pretty much the gold standard when it comes to Space Echo emulations"5.
- That Pedal Show: on whether it sounds like a real RE-201, "the answer to that seems to be a resounding no," though the hosts framed it as different rather than better or worse14.
- Pedal of the Day: the pedal "captures the RE-201's magic in flawless detail," built by the company that designed the original15.
Against the older RE-20, the verdicts were clearer. That Pedal Show called the RE-202 "without doubt a significant upgrade," saying it is "in a different fidelity game than the re20," and that on the reverbs alone it is a significant upgrade, "much closer to the actual tank sound"14. The hosts also found it "does a great job of the interesting phase modulation of multi-head repeats"14.
On That Pedal Show's comparison of the RE-202 and RE-2, Mick Taylor and Daniel Steinhardt walked through the pedals' features, including mode 5, which gives playback heads two and three, and the hold and speed functions on the footswitches14.

Questions
What is the difference between the Boss RE-202 and RE-2?
The RE-2 is a compact stomp box, while the RE-202 is larger and built as a more complete recreation of the original Space Echo. The RE-202 has three footswitches, 12 delay modes, 127 preset slots, separate Bass and Treble EQ, a Saturation control and MIDI connectivity, where the RE-2 keeps things smaller and more affordable with 11 delay modes.
Does the RE-202 sound like a real RE-201?
Reviewers disagree on exact equivalence. On That Pedal Show the hosts found it does not sound like the original, describing it as different rather than better or worse. Guitar World's reviewer found it accurately reproduces the Space Echo sound while going beyond what an original RE-201 can do.
Does the Boss RE-202 have a looper?
No. On That Pedal Show, Mick Taylor and Daniel Steinhardt noted the RE-202 has no looper, which they found surprising for a pedal of its size and feature set.
How many delay modes does the RE-202 have?
The RE-202 offers 12 delay modes, built on the original three-head tape configuration of the Roland RE-201. Modes include combinations of playback heads, such as mode 5, which gives playback heads two and three.
Does the RE-202 have spring reverb?
Yes. It includes a spring reverb modeled after the original spring reverb from the RE-201, plus additional hall, plate, room and ambience stereo reverb types.
Is the Boss RE-202 true bypass?
No. The RE-202 uses buffered bypass, as listed in Guitar World's feature summary and guitar.com's review. Delay tails carry over when the effect is bypassed, and there is a dry mute option.
