The Boss RE-2 Space Echo is a compact delay pedal from Boss that digitally recreates the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the tape echo unit Boss's parent company Roland built in the 1970s. Instead of a loop of tape running past record and playback heads, the RE-2 models the whole system digitally, and Boss says the RE-2 and its larger sibling, the RE-202, are "based on in depth analysis of numerous original Roland RE-201 Space Echo units"12. It was released in 20223 and is built into the standard compact Boss stompbox housing, finished in the green-on-silver livery of the original tape units4.
For a player, that means the multi-head tape echo sound of the RE-201, its spring reverb, and its tape wobble, in a box that fits a pedalboard and needs no servicing. As MusicRadar's reviewer put it, "You don't have to worry about this going haywire"41.
A compact digital recreation of the Roland RE-201
The RE-201 Space Echo was a 1970s Roland tape machine: a loop of tape, three playback heads, a spring reverb, and controls for repeat rate and intensity. The RE-2 carries those core features over in digital form. Boss's own history of its delay pedals describes it as "a classic compact Boss stompbox package with core Space Echo features," including the three-head configuration and 11 modes112. Boss's Paul White writes that the RE-2 and RE-202 "offer extremely accurate emulations of the original RE-201 Space Echo attributes"121.
The pedal has been adapted for what Boss calls "a more pedalboard-oriented approach"1, and RockBoard's product page sums up the pitch: "the RE-2 delivers the coveted magic of the RE-201 in a pedalboard-friendly footprint"5. It carries a Boss five-year warranty13.
The controls and the 11-position mode selector
Seven controls sit on the panel, arranged as stacked dual-function dials: an outer dial and an inner dial share each knob position43.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Mode | 11-position rotary selector for different tape-head combinations43 |
| Repeat Rate / Wow & Flutter | Inner dial sets repeat rate; outer dial adds tape wobble and modulation414 |
| Intensity / Tone | Inner dial sets feedback intensity; outer dial is a single all-encompassing tone control414 |
| Echo / Reverb | Inner dial sets echo level; outer dial blends in the spring reverb414 |
The mode selector is the heart of the pedal. It offers 11 combinations of the three virtual playback heads, and all but the first four allow reverb to be added, so on some modes the reverb is off915. MusicRadar's Phil Barker found the Wow and Flutter control particularly convincing, writing that it "accurately replicate[s] the quality of a worn-in/worn-out tape"4. He also notes the tone control differs from the original: it is one all-encompassing knob, rather than the separate treble and bass of the RE-201 and the larger RE-2041.
The pedal has two footswitches, one for the effect and one labeled Carryover, which lets the repeats continue after bypass10. Tap tempo is on board1, and the Ctl/Exp jack expands control: hooked up to a Boss footswitch it sets tap tempo for repeats, or press and hold for a Twist sound, "a disorientating oscillated echo"4. An expression pedal can also be connected13.
Power and connections
The RE-2 runs on a 9V DC center-negative supply drawing 75mA, or on a 9V battery54. Bypass is buffered9. Signal connections are stereo: input A (mono), input B, output A (mono) and output B, all 1/4", plus a 1/4" TRS control/expression jack410.
The 75mA current draw is modest, but the buffered bypass means the pedal is always in the signal path when powered, unlike a true-bypass pedal.
From the RE-201 to the RE-20 and RE-2
The lineage runs directly. The RE-20 Space Echo, released in the 2000s, was the first digital emulation of the RE-201 in pedal form, a dual-footswitch pedal with separate treble and bass controls and a longer delay time than the original161718. That Pedal Show described it as "a digital emulation of the fabled RE-201 in a relatively compact pedal format"16, and by April 2022 it was described as soon to be discontinued16.
The RE-2, announced in 2022 alongside the larger RE-20219320, is a compact version of the RE-20, which was itself a compact version of the RE-20119. At around half the size of the dual-footswitch RE-2019, it keeps the three-head configuration and 11 modes while dropping the RE-20's separate tone controls and second footswitch layout. Gearnews's early take was that it was "much better than Boss's first digital space echo" overall214.
What reviewers said
Reviews were largely positive, with some caveats.
- MusicRadar: "Worth the wait and worthy of the hype, the RE-2 Space Echo faithfully translates the mojo of the original vintage tape echo units" and "packs a lot of tweakability into a compact form." The same review noted "other more fully featured units available at a similar price" as a con, and found the reverb "a bit hard to dial in"4.
- Premier Guitar's reviewer found the pedal "gets those classic sounds bang on" but criticized ergonomics: "The critical 11-position mode knob is vague and hard to read in low light"74.
- MusicRadar's review noted the pedal "responds well to distortion pedals in front, or indeed after it," and that it is "less jumpy than the vintage originals," while lacking a controllable preamp4.
- guitar.com's review described it as a digital multi-head delay with reverb in the classic compact format9.
On That Pedal Show, the hosts compared the RE-202 and RE-2 as successors to the RE-20, walking through why a player would use a Space Echo at all and what the newer pedals add over the older emulation16.
RE-2 versus the alternatives
Within Boss's own range, the choice is mostly between the RE-2 and the RE-202. The RE-2 is the smaller, more affordable, pedal-friendly option with 11 delay modes based on the original three-head configuration, wow and flutter, tap tempo, stereo signal flow, and the option to boost the signal through the emulated preamp14. The RE-202 offers 12 delay modes, MIDI connectivity, two expression controls, a spring reverb modeled after the original RE-201's, and a delay length doubled compared with the original1146.
Against the vintage original, the trade is character for reliability: digital pedals like the RE-2 and RE-202 "provide convenient access to the Space Echo's features" without tape maintenance8, though the original's spring reverb is described by Gearnews as "both unique and warm-sounding on drums, guitars, synths, or even vocals"8.

Questions
What is the difference between the Boss RE-2 and RE-202?
The RE-2 is the smaller, more affordable, pedalboard-friendly version with core Space Echo features: 11 delay modes from the original three-head configuration, wow and flutter, tap tempo and stereo signal flow. The larger RE-202 adds 12 delay modes, MIDI connectivity, two expression controls and a delay length doubled compared with the original RE-201.
Does the Boss RE-2 have spring reverb?
Yes. The 11-position mode selector gives access to three virtual tape heads that can be used with or without spring reverb. The mode switch offers 11 combinations of playback heads, and all but the first four allow reverb to be added, so on some modes the reverb is off.
Can the Boss RE-2 run on a battery?
Yes. The RE-2 runs on a 9V battery or a 9-volt power supply, which Boss describes as making it very pedalboard-friendly. Its power requirement is 9V DC, center negative, with a current draw of 75mA.
Does the RE-2 have delay trails?
Yes. The pedal has two footswitches, one for the effect and one labeled Carryover, which lets repeats continue after the effect is bypassed. The bypass itself is buffered rather than true bypass.
What is the maximum delay time on the Boss RE-2?
Boss specifies a two second repeat maximum. That matches the original RE-201's approach rather than the longer delay times of the larger RE-202, whose delay length was doubled compared with the original unit.
