The Broughton Audio Synth Voice Deluxe is an analog octaver pedal: it detects the frequency of your input signal and generates a synthesized tone at the same fundamental frequency, alongside a sub signal one octave below, which you can blend with your clean guitar or bass tone. Broughton Audio describes the Synth Voice as "an original analog octaver that has extraordinary tracking, huge headroom, and heavy-hitting synthesis"1. The Deluxe is a variant of the original Synth Voice design that, in the maker's words, "improves upon the original by increasing sustain, as well as adding active filters to shape the tone"12.

The Synth Voice Deluxe is out of stock on Broughton Audio's product page, which notes "Sold out on December 9th." The original Synth Voice is also listed as out of stock1.

What it does to your signal

The pedal generates two voices from your input. The first is a synthesized tone at the same fundamental frequency as your playing; the second is a sub signal one octave below the fundamental. Broughton Audio describes the sub tone as "fat and bassy, compared to the typical glitchy video game sounding tones you tend to get from" other octave pedals1. That makes it a candidate for thickening a single-note part or adding low end under a bass line, rather than the glitchy tracking effects some octave pedals chase.

Because the circuit is analog2, it sits alongside other octave and pitch devices in the Octave & Pitch Pedals family, and its synthesized voices place it among Synth Pedals such as the Electro-Harmonix Micro Synthesizer or the Source Audio C4 Synth, though those work quite differently.

The controls

The Deluxe carries three level controls and three filter knobs, one filter for each signal1:

ControlWhat it does
SYNTHControls the volume of the synthesized tone generated at the same fundamental frequency as your input signal13
SUBControls the volume of the sub signal, one octave below the fundamental13
CLEANMixes in your input signal, from full clean to cut out entirely for a completely synthesized signal1
Filter knobs (clean, synth, sub)Cut high frequency content from their respective signals; higher settings give a pure sine-like tone, while reducing them adds harmonics for a more square wave tone1

The active filters are the Deluxe's main addition over the original Synth Voice, along with increased sustain12. Broughton Audio suggests using the CLEAN knob to "beef up your regular tone, add a sub octave for extra low end," or dialling the clean signal out entirely for a fully synthesized voice1.

Power, bypass and practicalities

The pedal requires a 9V DC power supply, which is not included, with a standard Boss style connector and center negative polarity1. Current draw is approximately 50 mA1, which is within reach of most pedalboard supplies. Bypass is true bypass, using a soft touch stomp switch to actuate a relay1, the same relay bypass system the original Synth Voice uses3. The enclosure measures 4.77" long by 3.6" wide1.

Questions

Is the Broughton Audio Synth Voice Deluxe true bypass?

Yes. Broughton Audio says the Synth Voice Deluxe uses a soft touch stomp switch to actuate a relay, providing true bypass operation. A relay bypass system keeps the audio path fully mechanical when the pedal is off, and the soft touch switch means there is no clicky mechanical footswitch underfoot.

What power supply does the Synth Voice Deluxe need?

The pedal requires a 9V DC power supply, which is not included. Broughton Audio specifies a standard Boss style connector with center negative polarity, the same type used by most pedalboard supplies. The current draw is approximately 50 mA.

Does the Synth Voice Deluxe take a battery?

Broughton Audio's product page states the pedal requires a 9V DC power supply, not included, and makes no mention of battery operation. Plan to run it from a standard center negative supply.

Is the Synth Voice Deluxe analog?

Yes. RockBoard's PedalPedia lists the circuit type as analog. Broughton Audio describes the Synth Voice as an original analog octaver with extraordinary tracking, huge headroom, and heavy-hitting synthesis.

Is the Synth Voice Deluxe still available?

No. Broughton Audio's product page lists the Synth Voice Deluxe as out of stock, and notes that it sold out on December 9th. The original Synth Voice is also listed as out of stock on the maker's page.
