Catalinbread Elements Fuzz

Fuzz

The Catalinbread Elements Fuzz is a silicon fuzz pedal built around a deliberately simple idea: one knob, set to full, and the player's guitar volume doing the rest. It is part of the Elements Series, a range of minimalist pedals from the Portland-based maker, and it sits alongside the company's long line of fuzz designs such as the Fuzzrite and Karma Suture.1

What it does

Catalinbread describes the Elements Fuzz as "a perfectly balanced silicon fuzz circuit"2, and the pedal is presented as a tribute to the fuzz effect as a whole. Guitar World reported that "the Fuzz aims to pay homage to 60 years of the effect in one ultra-simplistic unit"3. Silicon transistors, as opposed to germanium, are the classic modern fuzz recipe, generally giving a firmer, more consistent response across temperature and transistor tolerance.

The control layout is the defining feature. There is a single fuzz knob, and Catalinbread has maxed that control internally rather than leaving it to the player234:

"we've taken the liberty of internally maxing that control for you; just turn on and rock!"
Paolo De Gregorio, Delicious Audio2

In practice that means the circuit is "by default at maximum fuzz," as MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley put it, and the intended playing method is to roll your guitar's volume knob back to tame the fuzz level4. Players who like to clean up a fuzz from the guitar, rather than reach for a knob on the pedal, will recognize the approach; it turns the pedal into a set-and-forget block on the board.

The Elements Series

The Elements range launched with three circuits, each taking the same ultra-simple approach to a different effect5:

PedalEffect type
Elements FuzzFuzz
Elements OverdriveOverdrive
Elements DistortionDistortion

The Fuzz is the silicon circuit of the three2. Compared with Catalinbread's other fuzzes, which often add controls such as bias, filtering or octave functions (as on the Antichthon or Octapussy), the Elements Fuzz strips the interface back to nothing but an on switch and your guitar's volume control.

Questions

How do you control the Catalinbread Elements Fuzz?

The pedal has a single fuzz knob, and Catalinbread has set that control internally at its maximum. The intended way to play it is to switch it on and use your guitar's volume knob to bring the fuzz level down from full throttle to whatever the song needs. That makes it a set-and-forget pedal on the board, with the playing dynamics doing the work.

What is the Elements Series?

The Elements Series is a Catalinbread range of simple pedals that launched with three circuits: a Fuzz, an Overdrive and a Distortion. Each one takes a single effect and keeps the control layout minimal. The Fuzz is the silicon fuzz entry in that lineup.
