The Catalinbread Tribute is a low-gain overdrive pedal from the Portland-based maker Catalinbread, released in April 20221. What sets it apart from most overdrives is its tone section: instead of a fixed tone control, it carries a one-band parametric EQ, so you choose which frequency to shape and then boost or cut it yourself23.

Catalinbread pitched it as "the overdrive built for every guitarist," an all-gain parametric overdrive combining a high-headroom drive engine with flexible tone control1. Premier Guitar summed up the appeal for working players:

"Playing rhythm? Dial in a low-mids grunt and boost that band for some fat chords. Playing leads? Flip that thing and inject some sparkle into your sound."4

What it does

The Tribute is an all-analog circuit that pairs what Catalinbread calls an extremely expressive high-headroom drive engine with a supercharged one-band parametric EQ in place of a tone control23. That EQ is the heart of the pedal. Where a normal overdrive's tone knob rolls off treble in a fixed way, the Tribute lets you pick a target frequency and then push or pull it, which Catalinbread describes as studio-esque tone sculpting24.

Because the EQ band is selectable, the pedal covers ground a fixed-tone overdrive cannot. Gearnews found it can do an impression of a typical cocked or fixed wah sound, and can also conjure the out-of-phase tone that was in vogue at the time of its release5. Set the Freq knob low and boost, and you get fat rhythm chords; set it higher and boost, and leads gain sparkle4.

Controls

The Tribute is a four-knob pedal: Volume, Drive, Tone and Freq26. Two of them work the way you would expect, and two do more than their names suggest.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets output level, with plenty of range2
DriveA dual-gang potentiometer governing clean blend and overdrive gain at once2
FreqSelects a frequency between 70Hz and 1.4kHz to be cut or boosted2
ToneBoosts or cuts the selected frequency by 12dB, with a center detent2

The Drive knob is the unusual one. Rather than a simple gain control, it affects two parameters at once: clean blend and overdrive gain3. Rolled all the way down, you get a pristine buffered clean signal with a gentle treble filter. Turned all the way up, you get maximum gain with no clean signal23. In between, the clean and driven signals blend in a single motion, so the pedal stays dynamic as you add gain.

The Tone knob is a center-detent potentiometer. At noon the selected frequency is flat and the VariOboost-derived EQ section is effectively removed from the signal23. Turn it either way and the chosen frequency is boosted or cut by up to 12dB23.

There is no way to control the selected frequency with an external expression pedal; the Freq knob is the only way to set it5.

Circuit and power

The Tribute is all-analog2. Its EQ back end is based on the VariOboost, one of Catalinbread's oldest designs, a boost pedal from the company's early years34. Delicious Audio noted it is the first Catalinbread pedal with a parametric EQ since the VariOboost3.

For power, the circuit runs from a standard 9V input but uses an internal charge pump that boosts the headroom to +18V1. That extra internal voltage is what gives the drive engine its high headroom, letting it stay clean and articulate at settings where a 9V-only circuit would compress.

History

Catalinbread released the Tribute in April 20221. The idea goes back further: as Catalinbread told Guitar.com, "I originally built the 'rough draft' of this pedal for my dear friend Tom Keithly years ago"1. The finished pedal pairs that drive engine with the VariOboost circuit on the back end, which Catalinbread describes as paying homage to one of their oldest designs34.

The Tribute sits in a long line of Catalinbread overdrives and preamps, alongside pedals like the Dirty Little Secret and the later Clean Little Secret, a low-gain Bluesbreaker-inspired overdrive announced in 2026.

What reviewers said

Coverage at launch was broadly positive about the concept, with one dissent. Gearnews, while acknowledging the cocked wah and out-of-phase tones the pedal can produce, was lukewarm on its own behalf5:

"However, I don't think I would have any use for this particular feature set."5

The writer's reasoning was that he already uses a wah pedal for these drive tones, so a parametric EQ doing a similar job did not appeal to him personally5. He also flagged the single frequency control, which sweeps between 1.4kHz and 70Hz, as a limitation: you can shape one band at a time, not several5.

Other outlets focused on the flexibility. Premier Guitar highlighted the rhythm-versus-lead trick of boosting the low mids for chords and flipping to a higher band for leads4, and Pedal of the Day called it "a 4-knob, amp-driving, tone-shaping powerhouse"2.

Questions

Is the Catalinbread Tribute analog?

Yes. The Tribute is an all-analog circuit, described by Catalinbread and by press coverage as combining a high-headroom drive engine with a parametric tone section. Its EQ section is based on the VariOboost, one of Catalinbread's oldest designs.

Can you control the Tribute's frequency with an expression pedal?

No. Gearnews noted when covering the launch that there is no way to control the selected frequency through an external expression pedal. The frequency is set only with the Freq knob on the pedal itself.

Can the Catalinbread Tribute do a cocked wah sound?

Yes. Gearnews reported that the Tribute can do an impression of a typical cocked or fixed wah sound, and can also conjure the out-of-phase tone that was popular at the time of its release. Both come from boosting a narrow band with the parametric EQ.

Does the Tribute have a clean blend?

Yes, but not as a separate knob. The Drive control is a dual-gang potentiometer that governs clean blend and overdrive gain at once. Rolled fully down it gives a pristine buffered clean signal with a gentle treble filter; fully up it delivers maximum gain with no clean signal.

What power does the Catalinbread Tribute need?

The Tribute runs from a standard 9V input. Its circuit uses an internal charge pump that boosts the headroom to +18V internally, which is where the pedal's high-headroom character comes from.

How much does the Catalinbread Tribute cost?

At its April 2022 launch the Tribute was priced at $179.99 in the United States, available from participating retailers and Catalinbread's own site. Gearnews also listed it at 209 euro at Thomann at the time.
