The Champion Leccy Kilter V2 is a modulating parallel FX loop utility pedal, which the maker also calls a "swing-swanger" for short. It has a single input, a single output, and two parallel FX loops, each with its own send and return, and it swings your signal between those two loops to create composite sounds and textures1. Guitar Pedal X described it as "a smaller A-B loop-back-and-forth modulator that blends or mixes two insert loops"2.

Put one effect in loop A and another in loop B, and the Kilter's LFO (low-frequency oscillator, the circuit that generates the modulation) moves the signal back and forth between them. Although it was designed as a utility modulation pedal, Champion Leccy says it also functions as a tremolo, a clean blend, a parallel mixer or a ring modulator3.

Swings your signal between two parallel FX loops

The core idea is simple: your guitar goes in one jack, and inside the Kilter the signal is split across two parallel FX loops. You patch a pedal (or a chain of pedals) into each loop, and the Kilter's LFO modulates between them. The maker describes the result as a swing between the two loops that creates "any number of different composite sounds and textures"1.

The LFO is the same one Champion Leccy uses in its Woozy and Skitter pedals, and it offers eight waveforms, including two random waveforms, plus tap tempo5. Two indicator LEDs, one for each loop, show which loop is active at any moment, a layout the maker chose in place of the single modulation LED used on the Woozy and Skitter6.

A practical point for the V2: the sends and returns are internally jumpered until you plug a pedal in. That means the Kilter can be used as a tremolo or a ring modulator on its own, with no extra patch leads needed1.

The controls: time, space, loop volumes and modes

The control set is small, and each knob maps directly onto the swing between the loops.

ControlWhat it does
TimeControls how quickly you modulate between the two FX loops3
SpaceDictates how far the signal swings between the two FX loops1
Loop A volumeVolume for loop A7
Loop B volumeVolume for loop B7
Tap-tempo footswitchSets the LFO speed with your foot on the fly27
Bypass footswitchEngages and bypasses the pedal2

Both FX loops have a simple volume control, each sitting above its indicator LED6. Those loop volumes are what unlock the pedal's other modes. With the LFO speed and depth at zero, the Kilter can run pedals or strings of pedals in parallel, work as a clean blend, or blend two gain pedals; with FX loop A patched and loop B volume at zero, it works as a broad-ranging tremolo6. Delicious Audio's reviewer took a similar view of its range:

"Essentially it's a utility pedal, but it's definitely not a one-trick pony."

Paolo De Gregorio, Delicious Audio8

The same reviewer added a caveat for tremolo buyers: if you only want a tremolo and do not need the FX loop functionality, other options take up less board space8.

Power: 9V, 45mA

The Kilter V2 takes a standard BOSS style +9V center negative power supply, which is not supplied with the pedal, and draws 45mA1. Guitar Pedal X's listing matches: 9V DC center negative, 45mA2.

No power supply is included with the Kilter V2, so you need your own 9V DC center negative supply, the same polarity as most pedalboard power bricks1.

From the original Kilter to the smaller V2

The original Kilter is based on the skeleton of the Skitter, in its "kilter mode"6. The V2 is the latest release, an upgrade to the original8.

The V2 is an upgrade to the original Kilter8. Its main differences are a smaller footprint and top-mounted expression inputs for both time (rate) and space (depth)239. Delicious Audio put the size reduction at 20% smaller enclosure dimensions than the V18.

"It's a much more practical and handy pedal in this format"

Stefan Karlsson, Guitar Pedal X2

The V2 comes in four colourways: a Red Knob "Universe" Sparkle Black, Pink, Yellow, and a variation of "Universe" with purple knobs2.

Questions

Can you use the Kilter V2 without pedals in the loops?

Yes. On the V2 the sends and returns are internally jumpered until you plug a pedal in, so the Kilter works as a tremolo or a ring modulator with nothing else connected and no extra patch leads. With FX loop A patched and loop B volume at zero, it functions as a broad-ranging tremolo.

Does the Champion Leccy Kilter V2 have tap tempo?

Yes. The pedal has a tap-tempo footswitch alongside its bypass footswitch, letting you set the LFO speed with your foot on the fly. The LFO offers eight waveforms, including two random waveforms.

What pedals work well in the Kilter's FX loops?

Champion Leccy points to running pedals or whole strings of pedals in parallel, using it as a clean blend, or blending two gain pedals such as overdrives in the two loops. Delicious Audio's reviewer called it a utility pedal suited to studio work and session players rather than a one-trick pony.

Where is the Champion Leccy Kilter made?

All Champion Leccy pedals and devices, including the Kilter V2, are designed and handbuilt in Philadelphia.

Can I control the Kilter V2 rate with an expression pedal?

Yes. The V2 has top-mounted expression inputs for both time (rate) and space (depth), so an expression pedal can sweep either the speed of the swing between the loops or how far the signal travels between them.
