The Cog Effects T-47 is an analog octave pedal built in Sheffield, UK, that puts two independent octave channels in one box. Each channel has level controls for your clean signal and for the note one octave down, so you can set up two different octave sounds and move between them mid-song. It launched in August 2016 alongside the T-65 and T-70, with a UK retail price of £1601. All three pedals were available direct from Cog Effects at launch2.

Two octave channels in one pedal

The T-47's layout is built around having two separate octave sounds available at once. Premier Guitar's report of the launch describes "two independent octave channels, each with level controls for clean signal and one octave down"1. In practice that means you could set one channel for a heavily filtered sub tone and the other for a fuller octave sound, then swap between them without touching knobs.

Switching is handled by two footswitches: one engages and bypasses the pedal, and the second swaps between the two octave channels1. There is also an A/B toggle switch that switches between the different octave settings, and a toggle switch to engage the effect3.

The controls

Each of the two channels carries its own full set of controls, so the two sounds are set independently3:

ControlWhat it does
DownSets the amount of octave3
FilterChanges the tone of the octave3
CleanMixes your clean signal with the octave3

The Filter control is the tone-shaping heart of each channel. Cog Effects describes it as shaping the octave down signal "from hairy all the way through to heavily-filtered sub-only tones"1. That range covers everything from a growling, textured octave to a pure low rumble with the fundamentals filtered out.

Tracking and build

Bass Musician Magazine reviewed the T-47 and found the tracking held up well on bass: "Tracking is very precise, even down to the lower range of a 4 string bass"23.

Ty Campbell, Bass Musician Magazine3

That matters for an octave-down pedal, since poor tracking shows up as glitches and dropped notes in a bass's low register. The reviewer also described the pedal as sturdy, with a spider web design on the all-aluminum casing3.

Where it sits in the range

The T-47 is Cog Effects' analog octave pedal, built alongside the maker's other octave designs. It carries a Clean control, which allows you to mix your clean signal with the octave3, and it comes in a sturdy all-aluminum casing with a spider web design on the front3. Reviewers found the tracking very precise, even down to the lower range of a 4-string bass3. For more on the effect type itself, see Octave & Pitch Pedals.
