The Danelectro Daddy'O is an overdrive pedal12. Its circuit is built around the JRC4558 chip, according to the schematic3. It sits alongside other Danelectro overdrives such as the Danelectro D-2 Fab Overdrive and the Danelectro Daddy O DO-1 Overdrive.
What it does
The Daddy'O gives a player tube-amp-style overdrive with an unusually full set of tone controls for a pedal of its type. JHS Pedals notes: "It has bass, treble and mid controls that allow you to dial in tones that other overdrives have a hard time with"2. An independent technical analysis on Guitar FX Layouts describes it as a "Slightly simpler circuit with more controls" than the related Danelectro Fab Tone, and the schematic shown there uses a JRC4558 chip3.
The gain knob is a known quirk of the original. JHS Pedals says "The original gain knob has a very weird range"2.
The JHS mod
JHS Pedals sells a modified version of the Daddy'O that addresses that gain knob and the pedal's top end. Their stated goal: "Our goal with this mod is to make it rock like the Gov'ner did back in the day." The changes, in their words2:
- "we smooth it out and give you a wide variety of options within that one knob" (the gain knob)2
- "We give it smooth upper frequencies and a tight focused low end that works great with any rig."2
Where it came from and who used it
The Daddy'O dates from the late-1990s Danelectro lineup. In a JHS Pedals history piece on recreating a rig from 2000, the author writes: "I bought it, loved it and used it along with the distortion channel of the Fender FM100H amp," pairing it on his Y2K pedal board with that amp's distortion channel1. Looking back in 2020, the same author concluded: "the Danelectro Daddy O overdrive is a classic, and I'd totally put it on my 2020 pedal board."1

Questions
What circuit is the Danelectro Daddy'O based on?
According to JHS Pedals, the circuit is basically the vintage Marshall Gov'ner with a few small changes. JHS also offers a modified version of the pedal that smooths out the original gain knob's range and gives the pedal smooth upper frequencies and a tight, focused low end.
What controls does the Daddy'O have?
The pedal has gain, bass, treble and mid controls. JHS Pedals describes the bass, treble and mid controls as allowing you to dial in tones that other overdrives have a hard time with, and notes that the original gain knob has a very weird range.
