The DevTech Audio DSOTM Vintage Fuzz is a true bypass fuzz pedal that expands from the silicon Fuzz Face circuit origins. It was designed as an homage to David Gilmour's fuzz tones from early Pink Floyd, and specifically from The Dark Side Of The Moon, the album the pedal's name abbreviates1.
What it does to your sound
Pedal of the Day's reviewer described the pedal as having "gorgeous aesthetic and warm, wonderful fuzz tones", and found that Gilmour-ish tones are easily achievable, but that there is a LOT more going on here overall1. Beyond full fuzz, the review notes the DSOTM is even capable of warm overdrive and distortion sounds, along with all out face melting fuzz, which puts its range alongside what players use dedicated overdrive and distortion pedals for1.
The controls: Boost, Filter and Body
The DSOTM carries three knobs, and each does a different job:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Boost | Sets the gain of the input stage. Fully clockwise the pedal is more aggressive and has more gain; turned lower it gives a more tame response1 |
| Filter | Part of the pedal's tone shaping; together with Body it provides a nice EQ1 |
| Body | Part of the pedal's tone shaping; together with Filter it provides a nice EQ1 |
The Boost control is worth understanding before you dial in a sound, because it sets how hard the fuzz circuit is pushed rather than just adding level. At minimum it tames the response for cleaner, milder tones; at maximum it drives the pedal into its most aggressive fuzz territory1.
Fuzz Face design and the wah problem
The DSOTM expands from the silicon Fuzz Face circuit origins, the classic fuzz design behind many vintage British fuzz tones1. Fuzz Face style circuits are known for interacting badly with buffers and wah pedals, because their input stage expects to see the guitar directly. Pedal of the Day explains how DevTech handled this:
"The DSOTM was designed with an extra input stage to resolve this problem, thus making it much more usable with other effects."
In practice, that extra input stage means the DSOTM should sit more happily in a pedalboard that includes a wah or a buffer ahead of it, where a conventional Fuzz Face clone would misbehave1.
