The Dingotone Classic Seventies Fuzz is an analog fuzz pedal built on the classic silicon Fuzz Face circuit from the 1970s. RockBoard's PedalPedia calls it "a spectacular reinvention of the classic silicon fuzzface circuit from the '70s," and describes it as supremely responsive to playing dynamics and perfectly responsive to the volume control on your guitar1. That volume-knob response is the defining trait of the Fuzz Face design: roll your guitar's volume back and the fuzz thins out toward a cleaner sound, roll it up and it opens into full fuzz.

Circuit and transistors

The Fuzz Face circuit originally came in two versions, one using germanium transistors and one using silicon2. The original design used germanium transistors at first, which were later replaced with silicon transistors, which are more stable3. The Classic Seventies Fuzz follows the silicon branch of that history. RockBoard's PedalPedia says it has used "very special hand-selected transistors plus audiophile and military grade components" in the build1.

Controls and playing feel

The pedal keeps the minimal layout of the original design: two simple knobs. RockBoard's PedalPedia says "There is a fantastic amount of control for a pedal with just two simple knobs!"1. The maker's description centers on how the circuit reacts to the player rather than on a long feature list: it is "supremely responsive to playing dynamics and responds perfectly to the volume control on your guitar"1. For players used to overdrive or distortion pedals with more controls, the two-knob layout means most of the shaping happens at the guitar.

Power

The Classic Seventies Fuzz runs on 9V DC with a center negative plug and draws 5mA1. That low current draw is well within what a standard pedalboard power supply output provides, so it can share a supply with other pedals without concern.

Dingotone publishes a product brochure for the CSF as its manual, available as a PDF from the maker's site1.
