The Dirty Boy Ball Buster is a boutique boost pedal, prized by its maker for its touch-sensitive response and the way it interacts dynamically with an amp1. Warm Audio describes its character as the "ability to push clean tones into rich British-style breakup, natural compression, and fuzz-inspired saturation"1. It was designed by Alex Saraceno, father of former Poison guitarist Blues Saraceno2.
What it does
The Ball Buster was originally designed to push the front end of vintage-style Marshall, Hiwatt and Vox valve amps, the classic approach of driving a non-master-volume amplifier into breakup from the input3. It does more than simply add level: MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley, writing with producer and Linkin Park collaborator Collin Brittain, noted that "it does not just dump a whole ton of gain on your amp, though it sure does that, but it offers some tone-sculpting features"2. Those include bass and treble controls that, in their words, "really do some heavy lifting"2.
Linkin Park and the From Zero tone
The pedal drew fresh attention when Collin Brittain revealed it as a key part of Linkin Park's guitar tone on the From Zero album, used right across the record. He called it "the biggest deal on the pedalboard"2.
"Dirty Boy pedals are the most musical, unique and dynamic distortion effects I've ever used, hands down."
That reveal put the pedal's story back in the spotlight, and Brittain's own words explain why the band reached for it: "Dirty Boy pedals are the most musical, unique and dynamic distortion effects I've ever used, hands down," he said2. The Ball Buster was used right across the From Zero album2.
