Controls: Fuzz, Volume and Bias

The pedal has three controls: Fuzz, Volume and Bias, on Alpha 16mm potentiometer faders, with Neutrik jacks for input and output1. The Bias knob is the one that sets the pedal apart, since it changes the character of the fuzz across its travel:

  • Bias fully clockwise: a velvety fuzz tone reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s1
  • Fuzz around half-way, Bias fully counter-clockwise (or thereabouts): classic rock and overdriven sounds on a clean amp channel1

That range is why the reviewer called it diverse: the same pedal covers vintage-style fuzz and cleaner pushed-amp tones depending on where Bias sits1.

Power and bypass

The Vintage Fuzz II is a one-hundred percent analog pedal with True Bypass switching1. It runs on a standard 9VDC (negative center) power supply1.

Thanks to its internal voltage inverter, the pedal can be powered with isolated outputs or not, so it does not demand a dedicated isolated supply the way some fuzzes do1.

Build and enclosure

The chassis is a Hammond 1590B aluminum case, which the reviewer noted is both lightweight and provides shielding for the electronic card. The pedal measures 113 x 67 mm, about 4.25 x 2.25 inches, and weighs 230g (8oz)1. Neutrik jacks and Alpha pots are the kind of hardware usually associated with higher-priced pedals, and the review called out both by name1.

What reviewers said

The Pedal of the Day guest review by Brian Johnston (February 2, 2019) was positive on both sound and build, and weighed the pedal against a straight Fuzz Face reproduction:

"Denis over at Doc Music Station did an outstanding job at reproducing the old Fuzz Face, but this pedal proves superior in both noise reduction and versatility in how it interacts with amps and other pedals at various levels of 'fuzz' and 'bias.'"
Brian Johnston, Pedal of the Day1

The review put the price at 159 Euro at the time and called it fair1. For players comparing it with other two-transistor designs, the maker's related Vintage Fuzz BC108 uses a different transistor set, and the Fuzz Pedals page covers the wider field.
