The DOD FX25B Envelope Filter is an analog envelope filter pedal, an auto-wah effect that sweeps a filter in response to how hard you play1. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as the reincarnation of the original FX25, with one addition: a blend control that makes the pedal equally responsive to both guitar and bass guitar1.

What it does

An envelope filter, also called an auto-wah, moves a filter automatically with your playing dynamics rather than with your foot, producing the vowel-like "wah" sweep associated with a wah pedal without rocking on a treadle2. JHS Pedals, in a history of a Y2K-era pedalboard, described it plainly: "an envelope filter, which is an auto-wah effect"2.

DOD's own description of the FX25B explains the blend control that sets it apart from the earlier FX251:

"The FX25B is the reincarnation of our original envelope filter. You still get that great automatic wah sound..."1

That blend control matters for bass players: many envelope filters track guitar signals well but lose sensitivity on bass, and DOD positions the FX25B as working on both instruments1.

Power and practical notes

The FX25B runs on a 9V DC, center negative supply and draws 10 mA, which is light enough for almost any pedalboard power supply1.

The pedal is analog and runs on 9V DC center negative at 10 mA1. Its low current draw means it can share a standard isolated supply output rather than needing its own high-current port.

Where it sits in DOD's filter line

The FX25B is the updated version of the original DOD FX25 Envelope Filter, with the blend control as the added feature1. DOD's filter line also includes the Envelope Filter 440, a separate auto-wah design in the company's range1.

Players

JHS Pedals' author recalled buying the FX25B for his board around 2000 for a specific reason: "I bought the DOD FX25B because Jonny Greenwood used it." He placed it last on that Y2K-era board2.
