The DOD FX33 Buzz Box is an analog distortion pedal designed to emulate the guitar tone of Buzz Osbourne, the guitarist of the Melvins. Griffin Effects describes it as DOD's attempt to copy the guitar sound of the Melvins guitarist and singer King Buzzo, and RockBoard's PedalPedia lists it as a distortion pedal with an analog circuit.1
What it does
The Buzz Box is not a straightforward distortion. RockBoard describes it as combining two circuits: the powerful distortion of the FX69 Grunge circuit with the unique octave fuzz of the MXR Blue Box. That puts it in the same family as octave-and-fuzz designs like the DOD Gonkulator, aimed at players chasing a heavy, unstable low-tuned sound rather than a clean gain stage.1
Availability and the DIY route
The FX33 is long out of production and, by the account of Griffin Effects, was a commercial failure in its day2:
"This pedal was so bad the sales just bombed so they are hard to find and expensive2."
Griffin Effects, 26 October 20262
That scarcity has made originals expensive on the used market. For players who want the circuit without hunting one down, Griffin Effects sells the FX33 Buzz King build-your-own PCB, and version 1.2 of that PCB includes a 3PDT Breakout PCB for wiring the footswitch.2
Original FX33 pedals are hard to find and expensive, according to Griffin Effects. The Buzz King PCB is one route to the circuit for players who build their own pedals.2
