The DOD FX66 FlashBack Fuzz Tone is a '60s styled guitar fuzz tone pedal from DOD, a division of Harman Music Group. It puts a vintage-flavored fuzz on the floor with four knobs covering output level, distortion amount, low frequency content and high frequency content, and it can run on an internal nine-volt battery or an optional power supply. Barry Rudolph's independent review found that "the FX66 works well and is very reminiscent of all those vintage fuzz stompboxes"1.

Controls

The FX66 keeps its four knobs along the top of the pedal, so the whole layout is readable at a glance while standing on it1.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeOutput level1
FuzzFuzz or distortion amount1
LowLow frequency amount1
ToneHigh frequency content1

An LED lights up when the pedal is active, so you can tell at a glance whether the fuzz is in the signal path1.

Power and switching

The pedal can be operated on its internal nine-volt battery, or you can use the optional PS200R power supply1. Switching is active rather than mechanical: the review describes "active switching for noiseless operation," and either way an LED lights up when the pedal is active1.

The FX66 uses active switching, not true bypass. If your board depends on a pedal disappearing completely from the signal path when it is off, this is a different switching design to be aware of1.

Build and price

The pedal has a rubber non-skid bottom, which helps it stay put on a board or floor1. It carried a three-year limited warranty1. Barry Rudolph's review priced the FlashBack Fuzz at $89.951.

How it sits among DOD fuzzes

DOD has kept fuzz in its lineup long after the FX66. The DOD Carcosa Fuzz is a later fuzz from the company, and the DOD Chthonic Fuzz, released in late 2023, was the first new DOD pedal after the Cor-Tek acquisition, with Fuzz, Output and Lustre controls aimed at lower-output single-coil pickups. DOD has also released the DOD Chthonic Dark Silicon Fuzz and, with Morley, the DOD/Morley Wah-ocTo-Fuzz, which combines wah, octave and fuzz circuits. Questions

Does the DOD FX66 take a battery?

Yes. The FX66 can be operated on an internal nine-volt battery, according to Barry Rudolph's review. If you prefer not to open the pedal to swap batteries, DOD also offered the optional PS200R power supply as an alternative way to power the pedal.

Is the DOD FX66 true bypass?

The FX66 does not use true bypass. Barry Rudolph's review describes it as having active switching for noiseless operation, and an LED lights up when the pedal is active. Active switching is a different approach from a simple mechanical true-bypass switch.

What power supply does the FX66 use?

DOD specified the optional PS200R power supply for the FX66. The pedal can also run on its internal nine-volt battery, so a power supply is not required to use it.

How much does the DOD FX66 cost?

Barry Rudolph's 2021 review listed the FlashBack Fuzz at $89.95 USD. As a pedal from the 1990s that is no longer in current production, units on the used market may sell at different prices.

What does the Low knob do on the FX66?

The Low knob sets the low frequency amount, letting you add or cut bass in the fuzz tone. It sits alongside the Volume, Fuzz and Tone knobs, which cover output level, distortion amount and high frequency content respectively.
