The DOD Chthonic (pronounced THAH-nik) is a fuzz pedal from DOD, made available on Halloween, October 31st, 2023, at a street price of $149.9912. It uses traditional transistor clipping that can be dramatically reined in by dialing back the guitar volume knob23, and DOD describes it as conceptually the dark twin of the DOD Carcosa Fuzz3.

Where a lot of vintage-style fuzzes lean bright and cutting, the Chthonic goes the other way. DOD says it delivers "fat, corpulent, fudgy, and sludgy tones"4, and Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson called its texture "thick, richly harmonic, deep, dark and dense," adding that it "sounds rather beautiful"1. It was designed with low-output single-coil guitars in mind, which is unusual: fuzzes of this type are more often voiced for humbuckers.

What it does: a dark two-transistor silicon fuzz

The Chthonic started life, according to DOD, as "an exploration of a vintage 60's one knob Fuzz Box." The engineers kept what drew them to that circuit and moved to modern 2N222 transistors, which DOD says "retains the tight grain fuzz tones that interested us in the original circuit"3. The result is a two-transistor silicon fuzz, the same general topology as many vintage-style fuzzes.

Because it is a two-transistor fuzz, DOD notes it works best first in your chain, the usual advice for this kind of circuit, where buffers and other pedals ahead of it can change the way the transistors react3. The clipping is traditional transistor clipping, and DOD's announcement says it "can be dramatically reined in by dialing back the guitar volume knob," so you can clean it up from the guitar the way players do with vintage fuzzes2.

The enclosure artwork mirrors what DOD calls the mythological and ominous tone of the pedal's sound4.

The controls

Three knobs and one footswitch: Guitar World notes "the Chthonic features a sole bypass footswitch and three control knobs"5.

ControlWhat it does
FuzzGain control, added by DOD engineers to the original single-knob circuit; sets the fuzz amount26
OutputVolume level, carried over from the vintage single-knob circuit the pedal is based on26
LustreTone control; lets you turn down the treble of the fuzz46

The Fuzz and Output knobs sit side by side at the top of the housing, a nod to how the circuit grew out of a single-knob Output fuzz box, with the separate gain control added later2. DOD says the layout lets you "finely sculpt their sound to either cut through a dense mix or sink into a wall of drone"4.

How it differs from the DOD Carcosa

DOD positions the Chthonic as "conceptually the Carcosa's dark twin"3. The Carcosa is a brighter, more aggressive fuzz with its own Before and After controls: MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen describes how turning up its After knob gradually changes the nature of the fuzz, adding top-end, a snarky aggressive edge, clicky attack, and eventually sputtery, gated dying-battery sounds7. The Chthonic instead keeps its character dark and dense, with a single tone control that only turns the treble down46.

Guitar Pedal X's Karlsson called the Chthonic "a great companion to the already legendary DOD Carcosa Fuzz, with a somewhat different texture to that"1. The two also suit different guitars: Gearnews' Jef noted "the Carcosa can be a little too shrill" with single-coil pickups, and hoped the Chthonic would be "just as useful for single-coil players"8. DOD itself says the Chthonic works best with low-output, non-active single-coil instruments, though it can also produce heavy sounds with humbuckers and active instruments4.

Questions

How do you pronounce Chthonic?

DOD says THAH-nik, and Guitar World gives it as "thaw-neck." Either way, the name comes from the Greek word for things of the underworld, which matches the pedal's dark, ominous artwork and sludgy fuzz character.

Does the DOD Chthonic Fuzz take a battery?

Yes. It accepts a 9V alkaline dry battery or a linear 9V DC adapter, so it works on a pedalboard or standalone. No current draw figure has been published by DOD.

Is the Chthonic Fuzz true bypass?

Yes. DOD states the Chthonic features true bypass, so your clean signal passes untouched when the pedal is off. It has a single bypass footswitch and no other switches.

Does the Chthonic Fuzz work with single-coil pickups?

That is what it was designed for. DOD says it works best with low-output, non-active single-coil instruments, though it can also produce heavy sounds with humbuckers and active instruments. Gearnews hoped it would suit single-coil players better than the Carcosa, which can be a little too shrill with them.

Can you use the Chthonic Fuzz on bass?

DOD describes it as delivering raw, gritty textures with an aggressive midrange growl, offering a crushing wall of fuzz while keeping clarity for lower-end tones, language that points at bass players as well as guitarists.

What transistors does the DOD Chthonic use?

It is a two-transistor silicon fuzz built on modern 2N222 transistors. DOD says moving to the modern 2N222 retains the tight grain fuzz tones that interested them in the original vintage circuit.
