The DOD OD-250 Yellow reissue is an overdrive pedal that brings back DOD's 1970s Overdrive Preamp 250 circuit in a yellow enclosure. It was made in China and sold new cheaply, according to Analog Mike of aNaLoG.MaN, a pedal modder who worked with these circuits12. The reissue is now discontinued, and the newer version cannot be modded because its circuitry is surface-mounted and robot built1.

The circuit and how it sounds

The Yellow reissue shares its circuit board with the DOD YJM-308, with just a few different component values between the two pedals1. Analog Mike describes the difference in tone this way: the Yellow reissue pedals "have more low end like the original," though they "can get a little flabby on the low end"1. For players comparing the two, the choice is essentially about that low-end character rather than a different circuit design.

Modding and why it stopped

aNaLoG.MaN offered mods for these pedals, but that door has closed. As Analog Mike put it1:

"Sorry these were discontinued and the new version is all surface-mounted robot built circuitry so we can't mod them."
Analog Mike (Mike of aNaLoG.MaN) and Michael A. Spitzer1

The reissue is discontinued, and its surface-mounted construction rules out the component-level mods that the earlier hand-wired boards could take.

DOD has revisited the 250 circuit several times, and the Yellow reissue sits among them1:

  • The original DOD 250 Overdrive Preamp from the 1970s, the circuit the reissue recalls.
  • The DOD YJM-308, which uses the same circuit board as the Yellow reissue with a few different component values1.
  • The DOD OD250 50th Anniversary Edition, a limited overdrive/preamp pedal hand-built in the USA, limited to a 1,974-piece run commemorating DOD's start year of 1974, with a metal flake gray finish and classic yellow screenprint as a callback to the original2. It listed at $250.00 as of December 2, 20242.
  • The DOD Overdrive Preamp 250-X, a later generation of the 250 overdrive.

The 50th Anniversary Edition also differs in flexibility: a three-position toggle switch offers SILICON mode, replicating the original sound; Ge/ASYM mode, which uses a vintage germanium diode for asymmetrical even-harmonic distortion; and LIFT mode, which cuts the diode clipping from the signal path, allowing a clean boost or a dirty boost when the vintage LM741 op-amp is clipped at higher gain settings. It keeps Gain and Level controls using the original potentiometer values and tapers, features true bypass, and ships with a serial-numbered Certificate of Authenticity, a commemorative laser-etched pedal topper, commemorative guitar picks, and multiple commemorative stickers2.

Questions

Is the DOD OD-250 Yellow reissue still made?

No. Analog Mike of aNaLoG.MaN, who offered mods for the earlier version, states that the yellow OD-250 reissue was discontinued. He adds that the newer version uses surface-mounted, robot-built circuitry, so it cannot be modded the way the earlier hand-wired boards could.

Where is the DOD OD-250 Yellow reissue made?

The yellow OD-250 reissue was made in China. By contrast, the limited DOD OD250 50th Anniversary Edition was hand-built in the USA.

Is the DOD OD250 50th Anniversary Edition true bypass?

Yes. According to Bass Magazine's announcement, the DOD 250 features true bypass to maintain the integrity of the guitar's tone.

How many DOD OD250 50th Anniversary Editions were made?

The 50th Anniversary Edition was limited to a 1,974-piece run, commemorating the year DOD started, 1974.

What do the SILICON, Ge/ASYM and LIFT modes do?

On the 50th Anniversary Edition, a three-position toggle selects SILICON, which replicates the original OD250 sound; Ge/ASYM, which uses a vintage germanium diode for asymmetrical even-harmonic distortion; and LIFT, which cuts the diode clipping from the signal path, allowing a clean boost or a dirty boost when the vintage LM741 op-amp is clipped at higher gain settings.

Can the new OD-250 Yellow reissue be modded?

No. aNaLoG.MaN states that the reissue was discontinued and that the new version is all surface-mounted, robot-built circuitry, so it cannot be modded.
