The DOD Badder Monkey is an analog overdrive pedal from DOD, announced in December 2025 as an enhanced reissue of the DigiTech Bad Monkey made in the early 2000s by DOD's sister brand DigiTech1. Where the original was a single circuit, the Badder Monkey carries three drive circuits, named Behaved, Bad and Badder, and a 360-degree Barrel knob that blends between them23.

Three blendable overdrive circuits

The Badder Monkey keeps the original Bad Monkey circuit but adds two new drive paths around it6. Each has its own character:

CircuitWhat it is
BehavedA new low-gain circuit for subtle break-up and warmth6
BadThe original classic Bad Monkey overdrive circuit6
BadderA new modern, aggressive high-gain overdrive6

Guitar World's reviewer Alex Lynham described Behaved as "sort of like a Tube Screamer set up as a boost - that is, with the gain down and level up"8.

The Barrel knob

The Barrel is a 360-degree knob that controls the blend between the three drive paths3. It functions as a seamless blend control, allowing any two of the three circuits to be combined in parallel3. There is a patent pending on the Barrel control2.

The toggle: phase and Troop mode

A three-way toggle switch sits alongside the Barrel. Up, the Bad circuit is in phase with the others; down, it is out of phase; and in the middle you get Troop mode7.

Troop mode bypasses the Barrel knob and runs all three overdrive circuits together as one circuit, blended evenly79. On Premier Guitar's demo, DigiTech's Johnny noted that running the Bad circuit out of phase "can produce fuzz tones and unique sounds"7.

The other controls

ControlWhat it does
BananasGain8
CuriosityLevel8
BarrelMode/blend between the three circuits8
Mood (Grunt and Screech)Dual concentric pot: Grunt cuts or boosts lows, Screech cuts or boosts mids and highs68
TogglePhase switch for the Bad circuit, with Troop mode in the middle7

The Grunt and Screech controls sit on one pot with dual concentric controls, carrying over the two-band active EQ idea from the original Bad Monkey6.

StagePlate

The pedal's base carries a reversible StagePlate. It ships with a non-slip rubber pad for floor use, but flip it over and you get built-in hook-and-loop fastening for pedalboard mounting83. On Premier Guitar's NAMM 2026 video, DigiTech said the patent-pending StagePlate will ship on every DOD pedal going forward7.

From the DigiTech Bad Monkey

The original DigiTech Bad Monkey was a budget overdrive made in the early 2000s, discontinued in 201591. Reviewers have described it as a Tube Screamer-derived circuit with the addition of a two-band active EQ4, and Guitar World's Alex Lynham called it flatly "a Tube Screamer clone"8. On Premier Guitar's demo, DigiTech's Johnny said "the Bad Monkey was used by tons of pros"7.

The Badder Monkey revives that circuit as its Bad mode and builds the Behaved and Badder voices around it6. Guitar.com's buying guide named it the best Tube Screamer alternative in its roundup of new dirt pedals1, and its reviewer Cillian Breathnach called it "a DOD reissue of a DigiTech pedal"4.

"The Badder Monkey is far more than a simple reissue; it's a comprehensive reimagining that retains the core green-voiced"
Delicious Audio3

The pedal is made in Indonesia9 and is packed into the standard DOD single-stompbox format with side-mounted jacks4.

What reviewers said

Gearnews called the Badder Monkey "a worthy successor to the original Bad Monkey, offering far more in terms of overdrive flexibility"6. Delicious Audio described its range as "everything from subtle breakup to chaotic, multi-voiced saturation"3.

On Premier Guitar's NAMM 2026 demo, John Bohlinger walked through the three circuits with Johnny from DigiTech, showing the Barrel blend, the phase toggle and the StagePlate7.

Questions

Is the DOD Badder Monkey true bypass?

Yes. The Badder Monkey is a true bypass design, so your clean signal passes through untouched when the pedal is off. It runs from a standard 9V DC tip-negative power supply or a 9-volt battery, and draws about 25mA.

What does the Barrel knob do?

The Barrel is a 360-degree knob that blends between the pedal's three drive circuits: Behaved, Bad and Badder. It works as a seamless blend control, letting you combine any two of the three circuits in parallel. DOD has a patent pending on the control.

What is Troop mode on the Badder Monkey?

Troop mode is the middle position of the three-way toggle. It bypasses the Barrel knob and runs all three overdrive circuits together as one circuit, blended evenly. The toggle's other two positions put the Bad circuit in phase or out of phase with the other circuits.

Is the Badder Monkey a Tube Screamer clone?

Its lineage goes back to the Tube Screamer. The original DigiTech Bad Monkey was described by reviewers as a Tube Screamer-derived circuit with a two-band active EQ added, and the Badder Monkey keeps that Bad circuit as one of its three modes alongside the new Behaved and Badder voices.

Where is the Badder Monkey made?

MusicRadar's review lists the pedal's origin as Indonesia. It is sold under the DOD brand, which is a sister brand of DigiTech, and was announced in December 2025 with a US price around $149.
