The EarthQuaker Devices x Boris collaboration pedal is a fuzz that EarthQuaker Devices teased as an upcoming collaboration with the Japanese band Boris. Writing in November 2021, Guitar.com's Cillian Breathnach reported that the pedal is "a new fuzz based on Wata's main Elk Sustainar pedal", Wata being Boris's guitarist1.
"EarthQuaker Devices has continued to tease its upcoming collaboration with the legendary Boris"
What it does
The pedal is a fuzz, built around the circuit of the Elk Sustainar pedal that Wata uses as her main fuzz with Boris1. EarthQuaker Devices has a history of building pedals around artists' favorite circuits, and the Boris collaboration follows that pattern: take the pedal a player relies on and put it into production. The company's Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar came about the same way, with guitarist Wata's own pedal as the reference.
Where it sits in EarthQuaker's fuzz range
EarthQuaker Devices makes a wide range of fuzzes, from the Hoof V2 and Cloven Hoof V2 to the Erupter, Fuzz Master General and Spires. The Boris collaboration pedal belongs to that artist-pedal branch of the lineup, alongside the Hizumitas models1.
