The EarthQuaker Devices ZEQD-Pre is an all-analog tube preamplifier pedal built in collaboration with Dr. Z Amplification. At its core is a genuine EF86 pentode tube, the same tube that gives many Dr. Z amplifiers their pristine hi-fi tone, and the circuit is modeled on the first gain stages of Dr. Z amps that use the EF8612. EarthQuaker describes it as delivering authentic tube warmth and dynamic response in a complete analog amplifier system that fits right on your pedalboard1.

It launched on January 8, 2026, priced at $3993, and as of October 2026 it is listed on preorder from EarthQuaker Devices1. It is built in Akron, Ohio, USA4.

What it does: an EF86 tube preamp for the pedalboard

Most tube preamp pedals use a 12AX7/ECC83 preamp tube. The ZEQD-Pre instead uses an EF86 pentode, chosen for its high gain factor, wide bandwidth, and dynamic sensitivity67. Mike Zaite, the founder of Dr. Z Amplification, developed the preamp circuit himself, basing it on the first gain stages in his EF86-based amps2.

Guitar World places it carefully among the alternatives: it is not an overdrive, nor strictly an amp-in-a-pedal like you would get from Friedman or Victory. Instead, it is a tool that takes your pedals and gives their tone a valve-y push8. Premier Guitar's write-up found it works in two directions at once: it can lend body and excitement to big tube amps that sound flat at low volume, and as an analog addition to digital signal chains it adds real life and a tactile dimension to flat, drab, or spiky DAW and modeler tones9.

Delicious Audio breaks its roles into three simultaneous jobs7:

  • A preamp/boost pedal into your existing guitar amp
  • A direct recording interface via the balanced XLR output with switchable analog cab sim
  • A headphone practice amp with a dedicated level control, with the cab simulation always available even when bypassed

The controls

The front panel keeps things simple, which reviewers noted as a deliberate strength. Premier Guitar wrote that "The things they didn't add make it easier to use. The streamlined design also makes the ZEQD-Pre feel truly additive"10.

ControlWhat it does
LevelSets the output volume of the preamp
Bass, Middle, TreblePassive three-band EQ for tone shaping15
BoostSets the level of the boost section15
Activate footswitchSwitches the pedal in and out, with mechanical true bypass1
Boost footswitchDefeats the tone section and delivers a full-range boost1
Ground LiftLifts ground on the XLR output to fight hum6
Cab SimSwitches the analog cabinet simulation5

Boost mode bypasses the EQ

The Boost footswitch is the pedal's second personality. When you engage it, the three-band EQ drops out of the signal and the pedal becomes a full-range boost with its own level control, the Boost knob, without altering the frequency response13. gearnews.com described it as defeating the tone section and offering a massive output, designed to push an amp hard6. MusicRadar's reviewer summed up the design as "a passive three-band EQ, volume control, and a boost switch that bypasses the EQ entirely to really let the tube" do its thing5.

Power and connections

The ZEQD-Pre takes a standard 9-volt DC power supply with a 2.1 mm negative-center barrel, and it needs 500 mA or higher to work as advertised12. There is no battery option; it requires power from a pedalboard supply3.

The 500 mA draw is high for a pedal. EarthQuaker states it needs 500 mA to work as advertised2, so check that your power supply can deliver that on a single output before relying on a shared or low-current supply.

Connections are on the top and side panels: a 1/4" input and 1/4" output, a balanced XLR DI output on the left side of the pedal with a Ground Lift switch, and a TRS 1/4" headphone output165. Guitar Pedal X also lists a DIN DI Direct Out, Ground Lift button and Cab Bypass button on the left-hand panel11. Input impedance is 10 MΩ, output impedance is variable, the headphone output impedance is 39Ω, and the direct output impedance is 100Ω4.

Cab sim, headphones and recording

Built-in analog cabinet simulation is applied to both the headphone and XLR outputs6. The headphone jack has its own built-in analog cab sim, which Pedal of the Day described as giving a realistic amp feel during quiet practice sessions12. gearnews.com found the dedicated headphone output useful for playing at home without disturbing everyone, and expected the pedal to excel at live and studio work6.

What reviewers said

  • gearnews.com: expecting some nice boutique tube-amp tones purely because it uses a Dr. Z design, and on price, "They aren't exactly cheap, but you get what you pay for"6.
  • Premier Guitar: the restraint in what was left out makes it elegant and easier to use, and it can lend body and excitement to big tube amps that sound flat at low volume9.
  • Guitar World: not an overdrive, nor strictly an amp-in-a-pedal, but a tool that gives your pedals valve-y oomph8.

Questions

Does the ZEQD-Pre have a cab sim for headphones?

Yes. The headphone output has built-in analog cabinet simulation, and the same cab sim is applied to the balanced XLR output. A Cab Sim control lets you switch it, and the simulation stays available even when the pedal is bypassed, so quiet headphone practice still sounds like an amp.

Can I record directly with the ZEQD-Pre?

Yes. The pedal works as a direct recording interface through its balanced XLR output, which carries the switchable analog cabinet simulation. A Ground Lift switch on the XLR output helps with ground-loop hum into an interface. Reviewers at gearnews.com expected it to excel at live and studio work.

Is the ZEQD-Pre an overdrive?

No. Guitar World describes it as neither an overdrive nor strictly an amp-in-a-pedal like Friedman or Victory. It is a preamp built around an EF86 pentode tube that shapes tone and adds tube character, with a separate boost section that pushes an amp hard.

Where is the ZEQD-Pre made?

It is built in Akron, Ohio, USA, by EarthQuaker Devices, in collaboration with Dr. Z Amplification. Mike Zaite, the founder of Dr. Z, developed the preamp circuit, which is based on the first gain stages of his EF86-based amplifiers.
